Bijnor, Dec 9: In a rather odd set of events, the groom and his entire 'baraat' were thrashed and locked up by the bride's family for coming late to the wedding function. The incident took place in Nangaljat village of Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh on Friday November 6.

Reportedly, the bride's family was even accused of snatching jewellery from the groom's family.

Following the dispute between the two families, the bride ditched her groom and married another man from her neighbourhood.

As per police sources, the groom who belongs to Dhampur town in the district married the bride in a mass wedding function around two months back. However, the girl did not go to her in-laws' house as the couple insisted on having a formal wedding.

The families of the bride and groom then arranged for a traditional ceremony as per the couple's wish. In a statement by the bride's family, the groom supposedly demanded dowry which enraged the bride's family. However, the last straw was drawn when the groom arrived late to the wedding. The incident turned ugly which forced the intervention of the police, who released the wedding guests.

The groom's family was accused of demanding cash and a motorbike which the bride's family was not in a position to give.

Reacting to the allegations, the groom's side of the family alleged that they were locked up in a room, beaten up and all the jewellery they brought for the girl was snatched by the bride's family and her relatives.

"Both the families approached the police and levelled allegations and counter-allegations. Both parties have now reached a compromise. The bride did not want to go with the groom and therefore tied the knot with another man from her neighbourhood," said Haldaur Station House Officer (SHO) Kanta Prasad.
