Nanao in Second Round of World Boxing Championships

Milan, Sep 4: Indian boxer Thokchom Nanao Singh shocked his Azerbaijani opponent Mamishzade Elvin with a 21-6 win the 48 kilogram section to move into the second round of the World Championships.

Nanao took just 15 seconds to settle down against the taller Mamishzade, who used his longer reach to bag the first point here Thursday. But Nanao moved inside the Azerbaijani boxer's guard and attacked with crisp and accurate uppercuts and straight left jabs.

At the end of Round 1, Nanao led 7:2 and by the end the second round had opened up a huge lead of 16:5. In the third and final round, Nanao was in his elements and whipped up five quick points to send Mamishzade packing.

Nanao will next face Asian champion Pongprayoon Kaeo of Thailand who defeated Kapezov Adlet of Kazakhstan in a one sided bout. Nanao had lost the Asian Championships final to the Thai in Zuhai.

In the morning session, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Beijing quarterfinalist Akhil Kumar lost 2-16 to Navarro Roberto Gonzalez of Dominican Republic in the first round of the 57 kilogram category.
