Brazilian Monkeys' Thief in Police Net Again

Kolkata, Sep 1 (IANS) The prime accused in the theft of Brazilian Marmoset monkeys from a Kolkata zoo has been arrested again from Chhattisgarh after he gave police guards the slip while being brought to the West Bengal capital by train, police said here Tuesday.

Rajesh Saikia, the prime accused in Brazilian monkey theft case, was arrested late Monday night from Durg district, Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner (headquarters) Jawed Shamim told IANS.

He would again be brought to Kolkata, police sources said.

Saikia, arrested Saturday from Chhattisgarh from where the monkeys were also recovered, was found missing around 4.45 a.m. Monday when the train - Howrah-bound Ahmedabad Express - stopped at Jharsuguda station.

There were four police constables alongside two forest department officials escorting Saikia in the compartment.

The West Bengal government has asked Shamim to give a report on the 35-year-old Saikia's escape from the train despite guards.

Of the eight Marmosets stolen from the Alipore Zoological Gardens, seven were recovered alive from Bhilai in Durg, while one died of exhaustion while being transported 900 km from Kolkata.

The seven monkeys have already been brought back to the zoo.
