Mangalore, Jun 20: Pope Benedict XVI has announced a special “Year of the Priest”, that will last from June 19, 2009, Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, to the same date in 2010. It will be, in fact, the 150th death anniversary of Saint John Mary Vianny the holy cure of Ars, a true example of a shepherd at the service of Christ’s flock.

The inauguration took at Rosario Cathedral on June 19 at 5 pm with concelebrated Eucharist presided over by Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore,, with priests nearly 100 and large number of faithful joining the celebration. Just before the beginning of the Mass the Bishop together with the Vicar General of the diocese Msgr Denis M Prabhu and dean of the Episcopal City deanery Fr Stany Goveas unveiled the portrait of St John Mary Vianny with the logo, “The faithfulness of Christ, The faithfulness of the Priest”.

In his homily Bishop exhorted the priests to imbibe the qualities of St John Mary Vianny to renew the consciousness of their own identity and to reinvigorate the missionary zeal that flows from the divine intimacy from their “staying” with the Lord. He urged the faithful to love their priests and to pray for them. “We should be grateful to God,” he said, “for providing good number of priests to render their service in the diocese and requested the faithful to bring up God fearing families and promote vacations to serve the church.

It is a great day to remember all priests of the world. We wish to express our love for our priests and provide them with the support and encouragement they deserve. Our priests as the servants of God''s people. We wish to thank God for our priests who are indeed a daily reflection of Christ''s love for his people. Let us spend a quiet moments prayer in thanksgiving for our priests.

Today we speak of a priest being human. It is true but the question is, are they only humans? Or something more sacred and divine that we can look for in them. Is seminary training a just human training or something spiritual that our Brothers imbibe during formation? Along with the discipline, prayer, faithfulness to God and people, intellectual knowledge and wisdom will certainly make our Brothers to become good and holy priests. I really appreciate the comments of Herbert J Menezes.

It is a great opportunity to thank our priests who served in the gods kingdom, and for the people. Today Mangalorean catholics are well educated and well versed due to their hard efforts and blessings to the people and society. We always take this thing as granted. Let us pray for them today and everyday.

NEVER Attack a Priest The following are Our Lord''s revelations to Mutter Vogel. "One should NEVER attack a priest, even when he''s in error, rather one should pray and do penance that I''ll grant him My grace again. He alone fully represents Me, even when he doesn''t live after My example!" (page 29, Mutter Vogel''s Worldwide Love, St. Grignion Publishing House, Altoting, South Germany (29.6, 1929) "When a Priest falls we should extend him a helping hand through prayer and not through attacks! I, Myself will be his judge, no one but I!

Whoever voices judgment over a priest has voiced it over me child, never let a Priest be attacked, take up his defense." (Feast of Christ the King, 1937) "Child, Never judge your confessor, rather pray much for him and offer every Thursday, through the hands of My Blessed Mother, Holy Communion (for him) (18.6, 1939) "Never accept an out-of-the-way word about a Priest, and speak no unkind word (about them) even if it were true!

Every Priest is My Vicar and My heart will be sickened and insulted because of it! If you hear a judgment (against a Priest) pray a Hail Mary." (28.6, 1939) If you see a Priest who celebrates the Holy Mass unworthily, tell it to God! He stands by Him on the altar! "Oh pray much for my priests, that they''ll love purity above all, that they''ll celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with pure hands and heart. Certainly the Holy Sacrifice is one and the same even when it''s celebrated by an unworthy priest, but the graces called down upon the people is not the same!" (28.2. 1938) Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for them.
