Mangalore Church Attack: Christians Seek Copies of 'Satyadarshini'

Mangalore, Jun 10: On the second day of the current sitting of Justice B K Somashekhar Commission, which is inquiring into the incidents of attacks on churches during September last in the state, the Christians through their counsel Walter J Maben, sought copies of 'Satyadarshini', a book originally written by Paravastu Sooryanarayana and translated to Kannada, which allegedly was the basis for the attacks on Christian prayer centres. Maben informed the Commission that the said work has been given wide publicity in the newspapers and the electronic media but he has not read it till now. "Even the churches which are affiliated to Karnataka Mission Network do not have any information on this book," he explained.

Commission's legal advisor Hemalata Mahishi said, the Commission has decided not to circulate copies of the book in view of the unpleasant incidents that have already occurred, and invited those interested to have a look at it, to visit the Commission's office in Bangalore and read the same there. Advocate B Ibrahim, representing the witnesses, argued that the documents that are treated as evidences by the Commission become public documents and hence asked the Commission to provide copies of the book to advocates and their clients. Mahishi said, the Commission will be requested to review its earlier decision. As per the request of advocates Nova Bethany, B Ibrahim, M P Noronha and Lancy D'Souza, advocates for witnesses, it was decided to further examine witness Walter Maben after the controversial book is read.

PUCL submits documents, reports: People's Union for Civil Liberties(PUCL) district president P B D'Sa presented himself before the Commission and produced reports prepared by many people and organizations relating to the church attacks along with seven CDs. Dennis D'Souza from Vamajoor, Pritam Pinto from Karambar, Sr Jacinta Cardoza, M S Samaraj and some others appeared before the Commission and recorded their statements.  Fr Joshman, administrative officer of Believers Church Modankap said, churches in Modankap in Bantwal, Jodukatte of Puttur and Ganjimutt near Mangalore were attacked. Modankap Church was even torched and the three churches have suffered losses to the extent of about a lac of rupees, he stated.

Joshman also said, the devotees have been afraid and apprehensive of coming to the church to pray, after the said incidents. Mahishi recorded these statements. Lawyers B Ibrahim, High court lawyer Nova Bethany, M P Noronha, Lancy D'Souza etc., represented the witnesses.

Conversion Allegations on Monastery Unfounded: Catholic leader from Attavar Deepak D'Souza adduced evidence before the Commission to the affect that only sisters of the religious order reside in the Adoration Monastery, and they never come out. Therefore, religious conversions can never take place there as alleged by Bajrang Dal state convenor Mahendra Kumar in statements made to newspapers and electronic media, he argued.

D'Souza also said, because of the usage of time-barred teargas shells near Milagres, Sr Parmila lost her eyesight. He added that provocative banners, challenging Christian Missionaries to come out with facts on the murder of Lakshmananada Saraswati a week before the incidents, had been found hung in front of several churches in the city.  He said, sensing that they might disturb communal harmony, he had got them removed. He also produced a provocative article that had appeared in a newspaper, before the Commission. Citing a statement made by the then western range IGP A M Prasad that no complaints of religious conversions had been received in the district, he accused Bajrang Dal of misleading the youth.

Never saw anything like that in my life: Dulcin Monteiro (81)  from Kulshakhar, explained that she collapsed out of panic and injured her leg after stones were thrown at her house. She wanted the Commission to ensure that such incidents do not recur and everyone is protected. She came to the site of hearing with the help of her daughter Gretta and others, as she has not been able to walk properly.

Houses of Catholics also Attacked: Catholic leader Sushil Noronha stated that houses of Christians  located in the neighbourhood of the churches too had been attacked with stones on September 15, 2008. A group of people, who claimed to belong to Bajrang Dal, assaulted a group of Christians near a church, he added. “As the churches were surrounded by policemen, we could not attend to panic calls received at the churches,” he added.

In support of his argument that the attacks on the churches on September 14 and 15 were pre-planned, Noronha cited an incident in which Bhagava flags had been hoisted at a site near Bondel St Lawrence church in the city, where Christians used to pray since the last 30 years. He said, when he confronted a group of Hindus found there, they said this was government property and hence, prayers should not be conducted there. "My complaint on the incident to the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police has not been attended to and the flags remain at the same place," he explained. He also reasoned, that the group could have planted the national flag instead of Bhagava flag and surmised that their main purpose was to disturb religious harmony. He requested the Commission to ensure that the people enjoy freedom of religion, which has been vested with the citizens by the constitution. Noronha expressed the opinion that the people’s representatives and officials have not discharged their duties properly and impartially.

Mr. Krishna, Dont think that all those people who were attacked in Australia were Hindus. There were Other faiths too but their names did not appear in the newspaper. I know of some of my Catholic friends who too were racially abused and who took part in the protest. In Australia, they dont abuse you because you are Hindu, they go by the colour of our skin. And Being Indian and being brown, we are discriminated against not only in Australia and Canada but the world over.

This ''Sathyadarshini'' is a book that no one has seen nor read. Even the commission is not showing this book to anyone and there are no prints of this book available anywhere. Isn''t that funny. Why is it so hard for it to be known as to who distributed this book and to whom and when ? Only the Bajrang Dal seems to have innate knowledge of this book and its distribution.

Since the lumpen elements of Sangh Parivar are using that book as an alibi in their hate and violence campaign, they probably are the distributors of the book themselves! For those who suggest that books and thought should be banned. I have a simple question, who will decide which book to ban!, will there be a new censor board for books, or will sangh parivar use its exta constitutional role to decide what Indians ought to read.

Let me ask you a question - Anwser this honestly - What would happen if somenoe prints a book insulting Prophet Mohammad? Please answer. - Shashi, Sullia

Bandhavya - I think Amar Nathal is correct. We need an open mind. You state " Has anybody blamed Hindus ", yet a few columns below we have Browny in bold stating "Hindus" is all three sentences. Now is Hindu and BD the same ?, I think Amar has prescribed education as well!!. Lawrence, I know that you meant to calm the situation, but I wanted to highlight one point that you mentioned - "there is only one God" and yet your book says that this only god is Jesus Christ. No where in the Bible does it mention anything about tolerating other "Gods" or belief''s. I think even the ten commandments missed the words co existance and tolerance. However, I am impressed with your statement to understand the living life, this is what the need of the hour is. We hold on to an old book or belief system and try to make a point - everyone in that book knew what happened and where we are going and none of us have a clue. We are told is to believe it blindly ... Remember belief in god and belief in a system are two different things.. I am with the first. Right now, let us get some justice to what happened on that fateful day. Let us reinvent Lawrence''s living life once again ....

Many here have been blaming Bajarang Dal, why no one mentions about ''Sathyadarshini''. Condemn the wrong ones only after deep observation. There was no reason for commenting on Gods of other religion as in Sathyadarshini did. Lets first condemn the article in book & later others. The words ''Pen is mightier than Sword has come true''.

Any Books published against interest of other relgion should definetly be banned. Police force should curb such hatred publications, as it will create more damage. Further, followers of every religion should oppose such publications as ultimately it will create disharmony in society. Every relgion since preaches peace, the followers should support only the positive step.

Mr Amar Nathal, I totally agree with you. I would say 99.99999% hindus are good and peace loving people. The people of these twin districts have always shared common feelings. Of late because of BJP and its parivar''s evil political ambitions, this place''s name was spoiled. These political parties wanted to invest in communual riots and harp the proceeds during election.

The attacks were master minded, planned and systematically executed. No hindu individual is to be blamed. The blame goes to the organisers and planners and their political mentors. We dont ask for any punishment for the people involved as they are just the means of achieving the evil goals of the perperators.

We should find out the organisations behind such attacks and take all possible remedial and preventive steps so that such untoward incidents dont occur in the future. No body should feel it safe to disturb the harmony of this twin districts which it enjoyed since ages. The local people should think twice and act. All of us mangaloreans should stand up united against the forces, individuals, organisations and political parties who try to hijack the peace and try to devide us on ethinic lines. The message should be loud and clear " YOU CANT DEVIDE US. WE ARE ONE. WE ARE HUMAN BEINGS AND INDIANS. WE DONT SUPPORT YOU. PLEASE GO BACK. WE LOVE OUR NEIGHOBOURS. PLS STOP IT. IF YOU DONT STOP IT WE SHALL MAKE YOU TO STOP IT".

Hello Amar Nathal, Italy, it now looks that you don''t have sufficient education and knowledge to read and understand. Forget about knowing the truth. Has anybody blamed Hindus? All that is said is about terrorist group Bajrang Dal. It is they who claimed responsibility openly for the attacks on the churches. So what is wrong qoting what they have said? While opening the mind keep the eyes also open.

"ATTACK" ON CHRISTIANS IS THE SHAME ON INDIA. HINDUS MUST RESPECT CHRISTIANS BECAUSE CHRISTIANS ARE NOT INVOLVED IN ANY OF THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES. CHRISTIANS ARE PEACE LOVING PEOPLE. HINDUS SHOULD NOT FORGET THE GOOD WORK DONE BY CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES.

As mentioned earlier any book published by the Roman Catholics regarding religion will be scrutinized by the Church body and approval by the Bishop is required. Here regarding Satyadarshini book as it was targeted against Christians saying they have written this book, they have right to know the contents. Whoever has written this book, if it is against the fundamental rights of our constitution should be severely punished. Truth will always prevail over lies and truth wins.

It’s a great deal to join hands people from all communities to stop such crime and criminals from the society, apparently everything still looks communal and one sided. I can provide a copy of "sathyadarshini" but that doesn’t help to resolve the issue and it should be a closed chapter. Work on how eliminate such things in future. Hope mangaloreans work as one and not work as one based on meeting conducted at temples, church and similar prayer halls! I guess thats the only way forward. i am sure daijiworld will take a lot responsibility in working towards people as ONE!
