Mangalore: Suicide was Only Alternative, says D'Souza Family

Mangalore, Jun 9: All the five members of Henry D’ Souza  from Padupady near Katipalla who attempted en-masse suicide on June 5 have regained consciousness and have been shifted to the general ward of  A J Hospital.  With their recovery they will be discharged from the hospital tomorrow.  Henry D Souza (65), his wife Lethicia (55), their mentally challenged eldest daughter Anita Rita (35), son Joseph (32) and youngest daughter Savitha have regained consciousness and are now recuperating

It may be recalled that five members of the family comprising father, mother and their three children tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills and were admitted to hospital in an unconscious condition following a family property dispute. The only member of the family who escaped from this ordeal was their recently married daughter Suneetha who was in her marital home.

As the family belongs to Katipalla Infant Mary parish the parish priest and members of the parish council have  taken the initiative of pooling together resources from various quarters to pay the hospital expenses which is estimated to be about 50,000/-.  Parish priest Joseph Mascarenhus speaking to daijiworld  stated that efforts will be made to ensure their speedy recovery and also to settle the family dispute, which is said to be the root cause that resulted in the entire family taking up the dastardly act  of attempting suicide.

A wailing Lethicia D Souza was explaining her ordeal to visitors who were coming to see her in the hospital even as relatives and well wishers were trying to pacify her. Recalling the events of that fateful night when all the five members decided to consume an overdose of sleeping pills she said “it was her son who first mooted the idea of suicide as he was crestfallen due to the constant fights between his 3 aunts (mother’s sisters) with the family. Just a few days before this incident my aunts had come home creating a ruckus and we were very disturbed. My husband is not keeping good health. I had a uterus operation a year back, suffer from knee pain and unable to work.  My eldest daughter is not able to lead an independent life due to her sickness.  Under these circumstances we were left with no other alternative but to opt for ending our lives”.

Joseph speaking to daijiworld agreed that it was his proposal to commit suicide which was accepted by the entire family.  He was also the first one to consume the tablets after mother and son distributed 30 tablets each to the five members.  Anita, the eldest daughter is prescribed 4 sleeping pills per day by doctors considering her illness.  Since the family had the prescription Joseph bought 150 tablets from different medical stores and all five members consumed 30 tablets each at around 11.30 in the night.

It is the property dispute coupled with poverty that must have prompted the family to enter into mass suicide pact in a matter of momentary madness. Their neighbor Rohan D Souza, who has been instrumental in shifting the family to the hospital, says it is a close-knit family and naturally the entire family decided to end their lives as they could not think of living without one another once Joseph had hinted of committing suicide.

The property dispute between the D Souza family and that of the three sisters had left the family emotionally drained.  The church had tried to bring about reconciliation twice between the warring families without success.  The church and parishioners have rendered a helping hand to the family for the wedding of their daughter Suneetha who recently got married in the mass marriage ceremony held at Rosario Church.

Though the family is out of danger it needs to be taken care of to prevent any further eventuality of resorting to repeating the act. Joseph is the only earning member of the family and may not be able to resume to his duties soon.  The family needs financial assistance to come out of the bitter experience and rebuild their shattered lives.

Awesome reactions Mangalore...rather say Indians!!! I am amazed at the way a lot of us thought and hope that the rest who think otherwise wake up and change for the better!!! Let us all understand that it is not the duty of a Christian organisation only to help the Dsouza family.Himanity is everyone''s responsibility.

Tomorrow, if it were a Poojary, Shetty or Jain family, it could still be a christian''s responsibility to help.Let religion, caste, community or even Nationality be a base for us to decide to help our other brotheren.Humanity is our responsibility.

Let us act as only "human beings" and respond to the human need of the "Dsouza family" Let us not allow "Politics, religion or anything divide us on this.I am sure all of you agree, when we "die" none of us will be take the wordly things with us isnt it? Only thing that count" in his Kingdom is your "Deeds" and not words. Let us act and act "Humanly"

We were sad to hear that one of our Catholic Parish family(5 members) attempted for suicide on Saturday evening. We deeply sympathise with the family. When the incident came to our knowledge the Gurkar of the ward and representative of the Parish Council Mr. Rohan rushed to the house and took necessary steps immediatly.

They informed the Police and Parish priest made necessary arrangement to take them to the hospital with the guidence of the Parish priest, they were admitted in a well known hospital "A.J.Hospital" Mangalore and took care of them thereafter. They are recovering from the ailment and four of them already discharged. The parish priest along with vice-president and Parish Council Members and Gurkar visited the house and hospital and attending ''case'' with care. We are perceving the case and trying to settle the problem whichever that troubles them the most. Mr. Henry D''Souza''s family being poor and sickly, the Parish has taken care of them and are in touch with them. They are having a property dispute with their family members, and in the Church the Parish priest try to solve them by calling both the parties before one year, since both the parties failed to come to understanding, second party has gone to the court and the ''case'' is still pending.

Once they recover fully from the Trauma the Parish priest and the Council members try to settle their problem by calling both the parties amicably. Those who wish to help the family either to pay the hospital bill (around 50 thousand) and also rehabilitate them thereafter can do so by sending the help to the Parish priest ''Infant Mary Church" Katipalla.

I dont know understand what''s gotten into us. At the first given opportunity people paint anything in terms of Communal lines. Is our thinking that warped and evil that we cannot see the wider perspective of a argument or will we be going circles around the communal word?

The Topic over here is the Suicide pact signed by a Poor family whose back was to the wall, now where does Politics and religion come. And even if some of my learned friends feel offended they should not make a sweeping comment I generalizing the whole community, There are bad and good elements in all religion.

There seem to be several issues troubling this family. For those living outside India, our financial help will tide this loving family through their bad times BUT the Bank should depute an officer to manage the money into bonds etc... from which the interest accuring can go towards their regular monthly expenses. Then there is the family dispute which needs to be resolved locally with well-wishers, a lawyer, local police and then if needed probation of their Fathers last will & testimony with all sisters being signatories to the settlement worked out.

The last issue would be providing their disabled daughter some home/cottage industry income. Their son a simple, stable and regular job in a local school, college, hospital or institution. About some others demented & warped comments involving religion, politics etc, I would ignore such comments and let me tell you that you cannot change such peoples ideologies. This has been ingrained in their minds since childhood mainly due to ignorance and uneducated parental upbringing God Bless this family in their time of distress.

Mr Smeer Kukkaje, Salam alaikum, May Allah bless you. I dont rather manyof the readers dont agree with your narrow minded comments. This Dsouza family is human being like you and me. They are not angels or spirits. They do have feelings and emotions. Poverty and only the poverty drove them to take this drastic step. But their plight was not known by any one. They decided to keep it secret. For them prestige was more important than their lives. Just imagine and think what might have transpired within that family to reach the consensus. There are some people who share their difficulities with others and some dont.

You have to accept the realities. I am sure they must have explored all means. In the process they must have seen dark clouds from all corners and not seen any ray of hope. Its very easy to comment like Santosh. Please put yourself in their shoes and think. Even the funds from christian missionaries does not go to conversion alone, but a major share goes to community and social welfare schemes. Christians believe in charity and social welfare more than any other community does. Dalits and poorer are given lift in their lives.

Had the christian institutions known the plight of this unlucky family, I am sure they would have helped them. I agree there are some lapses in their system, as they are in any other faiths. I am sure they would do the introspect and would come up with more practical solutions to this type of problems. I pray Allah to forgive this family and help them in leading a normal life in the future.

Mr. Shanawaz, Kukkikatte. Very good comments. The society needs people of your thinking IRRESPECTIVE OF ANY RELIGION. All religions preach the same lesson in different forms. Keep writing and enlighten people who have communal thinking. The problem of D''souza family should be seen from the humanitarian angle and not to be compared with Politics & religion. Well said Mr. Shahnawaz kukkikatte, udupi/duabi. Your comments show your level of thinking and Mr. Santosh Bahrain comments shows his attitude and his level of thinking. Prejudice comments are like spreading poison. Readers’ humanity is the religions has no boundaries and let’s keep this as our religion. When I was a student, I met a small accident in Hampankatta and the entire community around came and helped me. They didn’t see what religion I belonged. Most of the times it was the laborers are more helpful, more humane. This is our social culture. Do not spoil people mind by spreading venom.

Mr Santosh Bahrain, again you have shown your polluted attitude. When it comes to poverty and humanity, why are you bringing the term minorities and majorities. You still live in your narrow nutshell. We are human beings and Indians. I being a muslim, dont consider myself as minority. I am an Indian and I represent 20% of worlds population as an Indian.

Our national demographic strenght is one fifth of global population. When a man is fighting for his life, do you go to his bedside and find out to which faith he belongs and make your decission to help or not to help. You carry venom towards the people of other faith. Thats not good. I think your attitude reflects your up bringing man. Dont be silly.

Poverty, sickness, calamities, rain, sunshine etc dont know the religion. They dont differentiate between the people of different faith. Who are you to do so my friend. The christian charities, old age homes and christian schools are helping not only christian, but also people from your faith. They dont differentiate. You want to devide the society on communual lines. If you dont like minorities, what the hell you are doing in Bahrain? Why are you living in Bahrain? Because your major community failed to give you your livelihood. How many hindus are living and working in Islamic and christian countries. India is not a hindu country.

It is a secular country that belonged all Indian muslims, hindus, christians, jains, sikhs, buddhists etc. Stop this hypocracy. Do you know what happened to BJP in the national level. The people of India have refused to acknowledge India as hindu country, but they voted in favour of more secular Indian state. Are you still hibernating. I wish you pack your belongings and go back so that you can preach and practice hate on communual lines. All the best to you my friend.
