Udupi: Tragedies befall on Family - Need Your Support...
Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RD)

Udupi, Jun 5: While the brother has no strength below his waist, the sister does not have any control over her body. Both are in their forties, and the only bright thing that can be said about them is that they have an insatiable urge to live along, come what may! Their aged mother, who is widowed and is the only bread-winner of the family, is equally determined to protect and look after her children till her last breath.

This is the heart-rending tale of an elderly poor mother, who has lost her only able-bodied son recently. She is compelled to solely carry on the burden of supporting her two disabled children, who have not seen the outside world and are languishing at home.

Sixty eight year-old widow Appi Moolyadi, her two disabled children, 38 years old son Harish and 34 years old daughter Baby, make up of this miserable family, dwelling in a house in Padoor Kooral of Majoor village near Kaup in the taluk. The family members are helpless indeed, but not hopeless. The fate has mauled the family and inflicted pain on its members repeatedly, but has not been able to douse their determination to carry on with their lives.

Harish and Baby, who are among the four children of Appi Moolyadi and her late husband Chandu Moolya, suffered from disabilities of different degrees after they were born,. Harish lost control over legs and his back and stomach appear like having been merged with one another. Baby has no control over legs and her left hand is defective. As both the children are immobile, they totally depend on their mother for their needs.

Appi's other son, Vittal, who was feeding and supporting the family and on whom his parents had pinned their hopes, died few weeks ago. The fate put paid to their hopes after he was diagnosed with cancer and succumbed to this deadly disease later, leaving behind a family that is directionless and support-less. Appi took very long to come to terms with this loss and perhaps, the need to look after her two dependent children, who would have become orphans if she had neglected them, enabled her to harden her mind and make a steely resolve to move ahead.

Bidi rolling sustains family:

The income earned from bidi rolling sustains the family besides the monthly pension and small amounts earned through doing sundry jobs in her neighbourhood.  Both the disabled Harish and Baby make an effort to support their mother by trying their hands at her job of bidi rolling, as they want to supplement the family income, since their mother Appi is getting older and  finds it difficult to manage the household chores and taking care of them.

Both Harish and Baby wanted to lead normal lives and are the victims of fate.  Their family needs the support of well-meaning, kind-hearted and generous philanthropists, to be able to live with dignity and respect and for securing their future.

Those who wish to support the family can send cheques/ demand drafts payable to:

Syndicate Bank
Kaup Branch, Udupi District

Baby Moolya -  Savings Bank Account number 01252210021718

Every time I used to read articles in Daijiworld with comments from readers spewing venom against people of other communities. But here the same readers are willing to help ou the needy and the downtrodden. Who says Mangalore is a bad place when there are so many people willing to help? Only thing, we should not allow ourselves to be misguided by political parties or their representatives. Jai Mangalore, Jai Hind

So that all of us may realise that how blessed we are to have good health and THANK GOD for that and come forward to support our brothers and sisters who need our support than to concentrate on so many other things which are going to destroy us. Our calling in is to love our neighbour as we love ourselves. God bless Harish, Baby and thier family.

Daiji, You have worked wonders by bringing to readers'' notice plight of destitute or affected. This case is different - it applied to two people of our society who are virtually immobile, unassisted. People will offer to help them by sending money to their accounts, a one-time contribution. However, it will be too difficult for them to avail banking services once the old mother gives-in one day. We need to arrange some aid to them that comes to their door as long as they live. Daiji, I know its too much to ask for - but will you represent us kind hearted people to establish a joint account for them which will either have fixed deposit amount or function as a trust ? We the able people should not take our mobility/health/wealth for granted? Let us come forward to help those who are less fortunate.
