World Junior Boxing: Sandeep in Fray for Gold

New Delhi, May 30: Indian boxer Sandeep Friday kept himself in the fray for a gold medal while his compatriots Namit Bahadur, Vikas Khatri and Shiva Thapa ended their campaign with bronze medals in the World Junior Boxing Championship at Yerevan in Armenia.

Sandeep moved into the final with a 8-4 win over Uzbekistan's Javlonbek Eshmatov in the semi-final of the 46 kilograms category. In Saturday's final, Sandeep will face local hero Koryun Soghmonyan, who defeated Russian Mogomed Djabrailov 10-4 in the other semi-final.

Bahadur, Khatri and Thapa lost their respective semi-final bouts to end with bronze medals.

In the 50kg category, Bahadur lost 3-7 to Kazhakstan's Talgat Bertleuov while in a low scoring match in the 54kg, Khatri went down 2-5 to Cuban Yunior Ernesto Valdes Boleri.

Thapa lost his 52kg bout 4-8 to Kazahkh Yerbolat Seidalliyev.
