Lucknow, Mar 16: Coach of a weightlifting team was arrested after he allegedly molested a woman weightlifter in a hostel room in KD Singh Babu Stadium on  Sunday evening. The accused was beaten up by some male counterparts of the victim before being handed over to the police.

Over a dozen teams had checked into the girls’ and boys’ hostels of KD Singh Babu Stadium to participate in various sports events being held as part of Kashi Ram Janam Smriti Samaroh. The two-day event, that started on March 12, was to conclude on Sunday evening with a prize distribution ceremony.

While the prize distribution ceremony was underway, some players in the girls’ hostel heard cries for help from a room. When they rushed towards the room, they found Manju (name changed), a weightlifter from Gorakhpur division, pleading for help while Lal Dharmendra Pratap, coach of Saharanpur division’s weightlifting team, was standing near her. Manju reportedly told the players that Lal had molested her.

Agitated over the incident, the players thrashed Lal though he pleaded innocence.
