Mahendra Singh Dhoni Threatens to Resign: Report

Press Trust of India

BANGALORE, Nov  22: Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has reportedly offered to resign from the high-profile post following paceman Rudra Pratap Singh's exclusion from the ODI team but the BCCI vehemently denied the development.

According to television reports, Dhoni had a disagreement with the selectors during the meeting on Thursday to pick the team for the fourth and fifth matches of the ongoing series against England.

Dhoni was unhappy that the selectors decided to drop RP Singh and include Irfan Pathan in his place and offered to resign, the television reports claimed, quoting an unnamed source close to one of the selectors.

The BBCI, however, was quick to rubbish the reports. "I can't respond to something that is being floated around by somebody," BCCI secretary N Srinivisan said.

The Indian players are currently in Bangalore to play the fourth match and the team management could not be immediately reached for their comments. Dhoni's customary pre-match press conference is scheduled to be held later in the afternoon.

The reports said BCCI President Shashank Manohar was forced to interfere and sort out the issue.

The newly formed selection committee, headed by former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth had met on Thursday for the team selection when the differences apparently cropped up.

Last year, Rahul Dravid too had relinquished captaincy. Lack of say in selection matters was widely touted as the reason behind Dravid's abrupt decision.

The team: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel, Virat Kohli, Pragyan Ojha, Irfan Pathan

Dhoni should not dictate. Yes, everyone knows that MSD is trying to establish his authority as a successful captain. But then, he should keep his territory within his own limits and not go out of the circle. That will be the time when Dhoni will be shown the 'red card'. No doubt, Dhoni has given plenty of wins for India as a captain. But the slectors also have a role to play and take care of all the players. As a captain, Dhoni cannot have his favourites to remain in the team.

RP Singh did get his dues by being in the first 3 one day matches and enjoyed the time surely. There are so many others including Irfan Pathan who also deserve a trip with the winning squad. No player is above the authority. Dhoni, irrespective of his success, cannot bulldoze his way past the slectors or anyone else for that matter. When that happens, he will find himself at the wrong side of the gate. One hopes that common sense will prevail for the good of Indian cricket. Dhoni cannot afford to resign in any case and lose the 'golden cage' in which he is now happily residing ! It is simply an empty threat to fool the public. Remember, most of the Bangladesh team players left the national team to play in the ICL but still there is a Bangladesh team taking part in their scheduled international matches today. No individual is bigger than an institution.

section commitee is trying to test the ability of the players as it is the right time. But our captain want to win all the matches with the same team who won the three matches. This is always the basic difference between the captains and slectors.Let us hope and pray this difference of openion should not cost us our Lucky Captain MR. DHONI.

Dhoni should be aware that cricket is not  a one man show. If he resigns there are many in the fray. Rahul Dravid also did the same mistake and we know what happened to him later. His career is almost at the end.

This should not be taken as a threat if Dhoni resigns. There are other seasoned senior players who can take the leadership of  the team and lead  us  to victory.
