Bangalore, Nov 5: At the time opposition leader in the Loksabha L K Advani inaugurated the 500 mega watt thermal power plant located at Kudathinni village near Bellary on Monday 5 and advised the state to become self-suffient in power within the next five years, the citizens of the state were made to face dark nights. It is learnt, that it has been decided to enforce unscheduled load shedding in the entire state including Bangalore city, in view of the reduced power generation in the state.

Three units of the Raichur Thermal Power Plant and one of the hydel power generators at Nagajhari have stopped functioning. While the unit No. 2 and 5 of Raichur Plant are under repair, the unit No. 3 and Nagajhari hydel generator have been closed for maintenance, it has been gathered. As a result, the shortage of power production from Raichur has gone down by 630 mw while suspension of the operations of Nagajhari unit have resulted in shortage of 145 mw of power. It is learnt, that the just-inaugurated Bellary unit is not working to its full capacity and is facing teething troubles.

At a time when the state is facing power shortages because of the shortfall in rain and coal supplies, break down of plants etc.,Advani urged the BJP-ruled states to own power policies that are environment-friendly.  Out of the 25,000 mw power that the state might need at the end of the five-year period, 30% should come from solar and wind power, he suggested. Citing the example of Gujarat, he asked the other states to emulate the model of that state in supplying un-interrupted power to even villages.

Yeddyurappa in his address, said that several investment opportunities are slipping out of the state's hand because of lack of infrastructure. Hence, the state will do everything to augment power generation by 5,000 mw in the next five years, inluding 2,000 mw that will come from the state's plant that is coming up in Chattisgarh, he explained.B'lore: Bellary Thermal Power Plant Inaugurated, But State Facing Power Shortage
