Mangalore: Pathetic State of Shiradi Ghat - Notice Issued to Contractors

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (MM/SP)

Mangalore, Oct 28: Recently, the state High Court has ordered the state government to conduct a detailed probe into the execution of the contract given for the repair and re-laying of the Shiradi Ghat stretch of the national highway 48 with assistance from the Central Bureau of Investigation and other experts, acting on a complaint made by a couple of lawyers, who had drawn the attention of the High Court to the fact that the road, which should have lasted for several years, crumbled within a few days of its opening. Now the national highway department of Mangalore division has issued notices to the contractors who carried out the repair and reconstruction work of the road at Shiradi Ghat.

Through the said notice, the highway department has asked the contractors to thoroughly repair the damaged parts of the highway immediately. It has warned them of legal action, if they fail to execute repair works as directed, immediately. The authorities have also said, that the contractors will also be blacklisted, in addition to initiating legal action against them, if they do not repair the highway stretch forthwith.

But, it may be noted that the highway authorities have been unable to provide a clear-cut reply as to why the highway suffered extensive damages so fast. The officials claim, that the gradation test is needed to be conducted on the road to find out the exact reason for the damage suffered by the highway.

The entire work entrusted to the contractors, has not yet been executed by them at the Shiradi Ghat section of the highway. In addition to repairing the bends on the Ghat roads, the contractors will have to maintain the highway for a year, after finishing the work. Accordingly, notices have been served to the five contractors who were assigned with the task.

Why blame the contractors only?? It is the responsibility of the concerned Dept/Officials to see that, the jobs/contracts are awarded to reputed construction companies. As everyone knows Karnataka is one of the most CORRUPT STATE & there is no wonder we have all construction, law & order (Police) etc problems in our state. NOW, IT IS THE PUBLIC TO DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT.

Thank God! Atlast there is some good news although it has to be seen as to how soon the repair work will be carried out. Good work by the highway dept. This will lead to the contractors being accountable for thier pathetic work. But as of conducting a gradation test, it seems like a stupid joke since everyone right from a kid knows why this road suffered such serious damage. I blame the police who never stopped allowing hay laden and other few trucks along this route by taking money, right from the day the road was closed to heavy traffic.

I used to travel this road every weekend by car and have been witness to it. This is also the reason why the KSRTC & private bus staff and passangers had a serious scuffle with the police near maranahalli. The patience of the common man went so out of hand that the RAF had to enter the scene to pacify the protestors. I clearly dont understand why there is no politician doing something for a road that bridges two important cities that has got so much economics between them. Anyway its such a waste of time to even talk about them.

Afterall they take the roads. They take helicopter or the plane. Thanks once again to the lawyers and also the highway dept for taking the initiative.

From top to bottom corruption is involved. Contractors are not only responsible for the debacle of rubbish roads. Government officials and middle men are involved. Although tax payers money is bergeled by day light robbers.
