Mangalore, Oct 23: To symbolically protest against the delaying tactics employed by the union government in according the 'classical' status to Kannada and the step-motherly treatment meted out to the language by the central government departments, activists of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) laid siege to the Mangalore Junction (Kankanady) railway station on Thursday October 23.

KRV activists led by office- bearers, then, handed over a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister of the country through the station master of the railway station. Through the memorandum, the KRV has reminded the central government that Kannada is older than many of the world's leading languages including English and Hindi and that Kannada is the language which has won the highest number of Jnan Pith awards. Because of the pressure exerted by politicians from Tamil Nadu, the central government is keeping the demand of according the classical status to the language in limbo, it has alleged.

The KRV has demanded for providing employment for Kannadigas in various central government departments on priority, building of Kannada Bhavan and Kannada College in Talapady of Kasargod district and making it mandatory for all the institutions, organizations, central government departments and commercial establishments in the state to display their name boards in Kannada.

While warning of taking up a strong struggle for the cause of these demands, the KRV has informed that a huge vehicular jatha will be taken out from Kadri Park to the office of the district deputy commissioner at 10 am on November 9, led by writers, pro-Kannada organizations, district-in-charge minister etc. It has asked the citizens to join this jatha and make it a success.

The KRV will be hoisting the Kannada flag at Rashtrakavi Govind Pai Circle on November 1, after which fruits will be distributed to the poor patients at Lady Goschen hospital.

In my school and college days I liked the history subject, but one thing I could not understand, how such a big subcontinent like India could be conquered by different invaders, as it is narrated in the history. Now it is clear and I can understand better what must have happened when people fought with one another, and how the invaders took advantage of the situation. Further what I perceive is, again we are going back to our unfortunate olden days.

Our internal fight among us is setting a stage for this. What are the issues we fight for......communalism, casteism, regionalism, language, sect, religion. We fight for Gods like children. 'Whose God is best?' seems to be an issue sometimes. Don't we sound sensible? There is development in India. But the development in above said issues is reaching its zenith. Politicians are having a bumper crop, because the masses are falling prey to them, and are easily swayed by the sentiments triggered by them. We need to appreciate the politicians for being successful in mesmerizing the masses, the mob the public.

They know the pulse of the people, read their minds well and create a lobby with so touchy issues which penetrates the heart (feelings)of the people. Nothing happens to the politicians, they are safe and sound. Who suffers is the general public. Bundhs, strikes, riots, mob terrors, bomb terrors - who suffers not the politicians but the general public the common man/woman, who vote for these people. In Hindi we say that 'inki duson unguliyan ghee mein'(when most of us suffer these have abundance of everything). Should n't we appreciate ourselves for repeating these mistakes (electing them) over and over again? for they inspire us to have more vedike,s more sene,s more vahini,s more ..... to have more riots, more fights. Let us rejoice and celebrate.

Lydia, The point is about the step motherly treatment of centre towards granting classical status to kannada. Of course, it is not possible to do teaching entirely in Kannada nor it is expected. One more thing desired is that all children should have uniform education

If one investigates secretly, most of these activists' children must have been attending English Medium School. I don't blame them - but one should not keep a tooth for show while using a different one for chewing. i.e. practice what you preach and if you don't practice it, explain why you don't. I agree that Kannada is our first language but limiting oneself to Kannada is equal to crippling yourself.

For example, if I knew only Kannada, I would not have replied to this news. Encourage Kannada to be a COMPULSORY subject - do not force all subjects to be taught in Kannada. One who may have ventured outside Karnataka would understand the importance of this.
