A timely advice from Dr Shetty to students of medicine. Teaching and Medical Practice have 'Service to Society' as their common denominator, the latter being always relevant on a one-on-one basis, wherein the human touch and the consequent bonding/rapport the doctor establishes with the patient play a major role in the healing process. Ironically, in one sense, the “touch” has a literal meaning, and even a routine check for vital signs could do the trick, as long as it is done in a personal sense.

The Academic and/or professional Degrees/Awards of a Doctor do not matter the human touch does. I knew a very popular (much loved) and successful general Practitioner who only had an L.I.M. as his academic qualification. Three Doctors practicing in Udupi with a great human touch had become household names throughout the South Kanara of old.
