Mangalore, Oct 18: ‘It is a great myth that India is a developing country. How can this nation shine while more than 80 crore people have Rs 20 as their daily income? Crores of people have been deprived of food and shelter in this land’, said C Ramakrishnan, national president, DYFI, on Friday October 18.

He was addressing the activists of the DYFI district committee in front of the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office. Ramakrishnan was welcomed at Pumpwell as part of the ‘Azadi Bachao’ rally. The rally which was launched in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, on October 10 protesting the Indo-US nuclear deal, price rise, and communalism, will conclude in Kerala on October 21.

He said that advocates of capitalism and globalization were against the novel authored by Booker winner Aravind Adiga, because the darker side of India is depicted in the book. ‘Capitalists have been arguing that India is a developing nation. A report published in one of the national magazines reveals that natives of a district in Orissa are not aware about the existence of shirts. Lacs of people die every year after being deprived of adequate food and shelter,’ he added.

Criticizing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the nuclear deal with America, Ramakrishnan said that Singh is an America-made economist. Therefore, his thinking would help that nation only. Anita, member, central advisory committee, DYFI, said that the Indo-US nuclear deal was discussed in the Senate seven times. But, it was not a matter of discussion in the Parliament. It reveals that the deal will never lift the economy of this country.

Sangathi Kannan, president, DYFI, Tamil Nadu, DYFI leaders Prasad, Abida, and Meenakshi were also present. Munir Katipalla, district president, DYFI, Mangalore, welcomed.
