Minority Commission Indicts Mangalore Police Officers : Recommends Action

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (MM/SP)

New Delhi / Mangalore, Oct 6: The National Commission for Minorities has recommended to the central government, to take action against those police officers from Mangalore, who resorted to caning the Christians who were staging protest against the attack on the churches in the state.

The Commission submitted its report to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Sunday October 5. It had visited violence-torn places in the state, from September 16 to 18 and put together the report, based on its findings.

The commission has listed the names of the DK district superintendent of police Sateesh Kumar, inspectors Jayant Shetty and Ganapati as responsible for caning the women and children, who were participating in the protests organized at churches in Kulshekar, Vamanjoor and Permannur churches.

The commission has also recommended to the centre, to place a ban on the Bajarang Dal, which is disturbing peace in the state. Meanwhile, agencies should keep vigil on the activities of these communal organizations, it has recommended.

Though the Bajarang Dal convener Mahendra Kumar publicly owned up responsibility for the attacks on the churches, the police did not arrest him immediately. On the other hand, they resorted to caning the peaceful protestors, the commission has mentioned in its report.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has convened the National Integration Council meeting on October 13 2008, to discuss the attacks on Christians in Orissa and Karnataka, in addition to others, it is learnt. Issues which affect the national integrity and the ways to control communal violence will be discussed in the meeting, said minister of state in the union home ministry Shakil Ahmed.

Nowhere in the world, especially in a democratic country, police can get away with this kind of brutality by entering the private property that too the place of worship without the warrant. Please watch the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN14Lpf3qOc

Dear santosh, police force is trained to handle such situation. What they have done is absolutely wrong. The demonstrators were Christians and not Bajrang Dalis

Well, you could (and should) take action against these anti social elements like bajrang dal, ramasene, vhp and their ilk you could (& should) ban them. But what do you do with politicians in Orissa and Karnataka, who pretend to rule (but occupy the Chair at the behest of these anti social outfits)? Those politicians who behave like they represent ONLY these fringe groups?

Those communal politicians who have eyes but can't see their evil deeds, have loud mouths but either just sit like dumb or speak against justice? Those incapable leaders who sup with the anti national elements and assault/ terrorise the already harassed minorities? First deal with them - the plague affecting the Indian democracy will be cured instant!

Dear Santosh/Bahrain..... I think if you or your family member (your sister or mother or if you have children) got hurt in this incident you would not have commented like this. I agree police cannot seperate woman and men..but police had thier eyes open. then how could they beat women? .

And about your section...who knows who started pelting stones? what business police had to enter the church ? You should have been there when the incident happened... then you would have realised. I suggest govt. to suspend those police officers immediately.

Why nobody wants to take action against guilty police officers ? They also deserve severe punishment if found acting against the law of the land and Indian constitution. They should be immediately sacked from "public service", a similar measure adopted in U.S..

I saw the video clips and the action by Mangalore police - too harsh, inhumane and terrorizing. They did not even hit the bajarang Dal activists who created violence and destroyed many churches. Where is justice ?

Dear santosh, Gathering inside a church compound for mass is not violating section 144. Bajrangis stood behind police and stoning people inside church compound is violating sec 144. And Police not doing anything when this happens is state support.

Caning women and children hundred metres inside a walled property is Human rights violation.Police could have well stayed outside the premises. Have you seen Kulshekar church?.

Dear Santosh Udupi/Bahrain, you are a true Bajarangi living in Bahrain. “Bahrain please keep an eye on this Bajarangi”. Living in Bahrain you very well know when section 144 was clamped and the timing of canning. Very good, you have political imaginary power and can become a sensational spokesperson of Bajarang Janatha Party.

Please leave Bahrain and come and join Bajarangis, you are wasting your time there. What you mean is if your parents, sisters and children gather inside your house compound during section 144, police can resort to caning to scatter them. Now we know you are not a sane person.

Its a good move against eliminating evil. Officers and political leaders responsible for these incidents should be arrested and should be given life sentence.

In my opinion, we Christians should forgive those police for the brutal canning because they were acting under the orders of superiors. But to those police officers who were responsible listed by the Minority Commission must confess publicly to Christians that they were responsible and will never repeat same again.

Why those police officers haven’t interrogated Mr. Mahendra Kumar??? He knows very well who had vandalized Churches and Prayer Halls??? Has he not terrorized people now then? See daily those people transport cows for slaughter Bajrangies are unnecessarily creating trouble to arrest innocent people. Biased nature in the law-enforcement must stop for ever.

If the opposition, Human Rights Commission, Minority Commissions were not intervening/exposing hiding truth situation would have been catastrophic.

When section 144 is imposed, it is wrong and against the law to gather in groups which is what lead the police for caning. When dispersing large crowds, police can not seggregate women or children as they will not have that much time in hand. There is no way anyone can blame the police force for this particular incident atleast.
