Mangalore, Aug 6: Renowned writer Sara Aboobakker opined that Gandhian ideals should be taught in universities to make the present day youth have a better understanding of the preaching of the Father of our Nation.

She was speaking after releasing the prospectus of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) here on Tuesday August 5. "I request the KSOU vice-chancellor, Prof B A Vivek Rai, to include lessons on Gandhi and Gandhian ideals in the university curriculum, as the present day youth are getting cynical and stooping to the extent of questioning who Gandhi was", she added.

Sara also requested KSOU to include lessons which develop scientific temperament among the women folk. Noting that even highly educated women are not free from the age-old dogmas, she resented the fact that women are being portrayed as self-sacrificing individuals even in the present day text books.

Ananthakrishna, chairman of Karnataka Bank, inaugurated the function. He said that acquiring a degree should not be the sole purpose of the students and the universities should not stop at distributing degrees. Noted litterateur Shivaram Karanth showed that a formal degree is not a pre-requisite to become great, he added.
