Mumbai, Jun 23: At a time when Westernization is the fad, it is a refreshing experience to see youngsters taking up an ancient dance form with gusto. Shweta D’Sa and Genevieve Rebello, both 11-year-old students, had their Bharatnatyam ‘arangetram’ at the Iskcon auditorium in the city, recently.

Both Mangalorean Konkani girls are residents of Borivili west belonging to IC Parish and studying in the sixth standard at Mary Immaculate Girls High School. The two are disciples of Guru Ravi Sharma and have trained under his guidance for nearly five years.

Seeing the youngsters display the fine nuances of the ancient dance form to the accompaniment of music, kept the audience spellbound for nearly two hours. The ‘shlokas’ were recited by Sangeet Vidwan Sethu Madhawan.

The thunderous applause and wide appreciation shown by the guests was proof enough of the girls’ mastery over Bharatanatyam.
