Mangalore: Bowing to Pressure, MRPL Slashes School Fee

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (MSP)

Mangalore, Jun 3:  The management of MRPL English Medium School here gave in to the demands made by the parents of the students studying in the school, and rolled back a major chunk of the proposed hike in the school fees. The parents were up in arms against the management's decision to unilaterally jack up the fee by about 150% for this academic year.

The peeved parents of the students of this school had dashed off a letter to the Central Board of Secondary Education, objecting to the school management's proposal to steeply revise the annual fee from Rs 7,500 to Rs 17,500, commencing from this year. The MRPL, sympathising with the genuine difficulties expressed by the parents, consented to contribute Rs 2.09 crore to the school coffers to meet financial obligations, besides extending support to raise capex funds. The parents, who were worried over the unexpected hike, are a relaxed lot now, having to shell out only a nominal hike of Rs 600 per child now.

The parents, in a memorandum submitted to the MRPL, had stated that they appreciated the high standards being maintained by the school, but pointed out that the sudden hike without consulting them was violative of the orders of the CBSE chairman.

School managing trustee T V Sujit gave the break-up figures of the immediate expenditure, as Rs 1.24 crore towards net operating cost and another Rs 85 lac towards additional expenses. MRPL will have to bear the burden of upgrading infrastructure too, he explained. He also spelt out the plans of the MRPL Trust to introduce scholarships for the studens hailing from the financially weaker sections of the society from the next academic year, after revising the fee structure.
