Mangalore: Construction of Dam across Gurpur River Opposed

Mangalore, May 7: A rights assertion meet was held to oppose the proposed construction of a dam across the Gurupur river near Polali at the Polali Sri Rajarajeshwari Temple premises on Tuesday May 7.

A large number of residents gathered at the meet to express their opposition to the construction of a barrage by Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) Ltd. Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi, Ammunje Mattu Kariangala village coordinator Jayarama Krishna Polali said that there was a possibility of inundation of agricultural, non-agricultural lands as well as three important shrines including Sri Rajarajeshwari Temple, Akhileshwara Temple and Polali Assayyad Baba Fakruddin Juma Masjid.

Villagers from Ammunje and Kariangala were present for the meet organized in the courtyard of Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple. Subraya Karanth, headmaster of Polali Vidyavilasa HP School, Narayan Bhat, main priest of Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple, Vasudev Bhat, priest at Polali Rajarajeshwari Temple, Venkatesh Navada, former president, taluk panchayat, Prashant Kothari, president, gram panchayat and others were also present on the occasion.

    I support this. Polali Shri Rajarajeswari Temple is very famous and lot of devotees come here to get their wishes fulfilled. Such a holy place should be getting into this kind of trouble by having the dam in Gupur river. This needs to be stopped without any question. It has a great history behind it. I am sure the concern from these villagers will be given utmost importance and this project will be put to hold.
