Catalonia announces independence referendum

Barcelona, June 9 (IANS): The northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia on Friday announced that an independence referendum would be held on October 1.

President Carles Puigdemont of Catalonia said the referendum would ask one question: "Do you want Catalonia to be an independent state in the form of a republic?", reports Efe news.

The Spanish government has not given its consent to the referendum maintaining that the Constitution does not allow for a vote on the independence of any Spanish region.

It also deems the referendum as illegal.
