IIT-M students protest against attack on PhD scholar who held 'beef fest'

Chennai, May 31 (Deccan Chronicle): Several students from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)- Madras protested here on Wednesday, asking for attackers of the PhD scholar R.Sooraj to be expelled.

Sooraj was thrashed, according to a report in The Indian Express, by a group of students headed by an ABVP sympathiser for organising ‘beef fest’.

Around 70-80 students marched towards the administrative block, claiming that the attackers were a threat to the safety of students. The protesters also demanded that the administration should bear all medical expenses incurred by Sooraj.

“We are strong on our demands. We want expulsion of attackers. This is the 4th time in 6 months that the Perpetrators have given threats (this time going all the way to physically assault) and no strict action was taken earlier even upon complaint. We definitely want expulsion this time,” one of the students told The Indian Express.

The Dean had invited two representatives to talk with the administration.

There were also protests outside the campus by student groups such as Revolutionary Students and Youth Front against the cattle ban and the attack on IIT scholar.

The victim, R Sooraj suffered severe injuries in his right eye. A group of 70 to 80 students had held the ‘beef festival’ on Sunday evening to protest against the Centre's notification.

On the other hand, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam also held a protest on Wednesday against the Centre’s new cattle trade rules.

The Govt should realise each state in India is different , no point in enforcing uniformity of thoughts and ideals all over , because it's only going to divide the nation. Hindi and Beef shouldn't be Govt policy , instead it should be Development and Social Justice. Don't interfere in the eating habits or culture of other state's , it's only going to divide the people more and more. Let the states where people want to ban beef , ban it , leave the rest out of it.

If Beef is banned people should go against slaughter of other animals like Sheep, Goats, chicken etc. (except Pigs). In few years there would not be any stray dogs!

..Opposition falling into BJP trap..if High courts can stay central order, then why so much hue & cry!!..opposition should have exposed perils of Demonetisation (online/credit card based economy makes citizen fall into debt trap same like western country, resulting in less saving and living under pay check after pay check) but opposition failed miserable in a hurry to defame MODI,.too much reliance on FDI is very dangerous but opposition not interested..another dangerous development, opening defense sector to private players..look how western countries govt & public policy are controlled by Military complex( military & private arms suppliers)..but Congress/sp/bsp/left parties never acted like a responsible opposition..for them except COW,SUIT BOOT, FOREIGN TRIPS nothing is visible..and BJP is very happy about that..

The central Govt is unnecessarily creating controversies with such notifications. The British were infamous for their policy of divide and rule. Our Political leaders should realise that our country is paramount.
