Chennai: Rajinikanth a Kannadiga: Pro-Tamil group opposes his entry into politics

Chennai, May 22: Speculations are rife about superstar, 'Thalaivar' Rajinikanth foraying into politics, with a section of the national ruling party BJP reportedly trying to woo him, even as BJP leaders themselves have remained non-committal but seemingly enthusiastic about the prospects.

However, apparently, the sailing may not be smooth for the legendary actor. A pro-Tamil group has strongly opposed his entry into state politics, citing that he was born and brought up as a Kannadiga and hence should not have anything to do with Tamil politics.

The group has said it would gherao Rajinikanth's Poes Garden residence here to register its protest. The police have beefed up security in response.

Rajinikanth had earlier hinted at his entry into politics while interacting with his fans. When asked whether he would be joining politics, he had said he would 'if God wants him to'.

Reports suggest that Rajinikanth may soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss his possible entry into BJP, but the party president Amit Shah and leader Venkaiah Naidu have both dismissed the reports as mere speculations. They however said that Rajinikanth would be welcome to join the BJP.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar said that Rajinikanth may float his own party instead of joining one. "As a friend who has known him for 35-40 years, I feel he may not join any national or regional party, but only float a new one," the TNCC chief said.
