Coimbatore: Maniratnam's Son Moves across as 'Red Volunteer'

Rediff

Coimbatore, Apr 1: Moving away from the glamour of the film industry to the world of Marxian ideology, the 16-year-old son of noted film maker Maniratnam has created a buzz by joining as a red volunteer at the ongoing 19th All-India Congress of the Communist Party of India-Marxist in Coimbatore.

Nandan Maniratnam, son of Maniratnam and popular actress Suhasini, is also the proud author of a new pamphlet on Leninism, which is on sale at the venue, along with other leading Left literature.

The 27-paged pamphlet titled 'Contours of Leninism' has articles under five different headings - Theory, Marxism, Democratic dictatorship, Materialism and Vanguard. On his inclination to Marxism, he told the media that he was impressed because it was the 'most cogent, comprehensive and highly developed complex of theory and practice'.

The thought of how his parents felt about his leanings towards Marxism has apparently not crossed his mind yet, Nandan Maniratnam said.

It is no surprise that communism as a concept is very charming and intelluctually appealing. It is also true that most youngsters get enomoured by it at a particular stage in their lives when they look for" ideals" in life. But what is being practiced in India/ in the other parts of the world is psudeo- communism. The leaders in India live a capitalistic life style but are very clever in hiding it from their "comrades". Also at 16 you want to be anti-establishment, a rebel. Nanadan is no exception.

Once he realizes that the "communism" in practice has no semblance to what he understood it to be, he will be disillusioned and shattered. Just wait for a few years.Hope he understands why Russia collapsed as acommunist state. Communism has been dead in the world. It lives only in West Bengal and Kerala, mostly because of the intellectual arrogance of the leaders with their ability to hoodwink the cadre.
