Udupi, Mar 3: Nearly 25 acres of land in St Mary’s Island was destroyed in a fire on Sunday March 2 evening. The fire refused to abate till nearly 9 pm.

It is said that the people who came from different places by boats might have thrown a cigarette after smoking. The dry grass caught fire and spread all over the 25 acres of land.

However, Malpe development committee convener Sadananda has said that no fire was noticed at 6 pm when a boat landed at the island on its usual routine. He further confirmed that only dry grass has burnt without causing any damage to the coconut trees.

Though head quarters assistant to the deputy commissioner Subraya Kamath and other police officers tried to visit the spot, they could not do so owing to heavy winds. The weekends see a lot of traffic at St Mary’s Island with visitors coming in large numbers.

Moreover, despite being a tourist spot, the Island does not have a caretaker to stay overnight and watch over the place.

It is very sad that an island so beautiful has destroyed by a fire. It is sure going to take a few years to regain its lost beauty. The only thing that remains for me is the memory of the island recorded in a travellogue that a friend and me wrote two months ago.
