Angry mob disrupts train services after man run over in West Bengal

Kolkata, Jan 19 (IANS): An angry mob blocked the Sealdah railway track and pelted stones at the station master's office after a man was run over by a train on Thursday, which resulted in the disruption of train services.

The incident occurred at the Sealdah main line of Eastern Railway when a man was crossing the track in North 24 Parganas Soepur railway station, police said.

The train movement was affected for two hours.

The victim died on the spot.

After the mishap, angry locals vandalised the station premises and pelted stones at the station master's cabin, alleging negligence of the railway officials.

The agitators also set up a rail blockade for almost two and a half hours, causing several up and down trains to be delayed, a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer said.

"The blockade was removed at around 1 pm. The train services have now become normal," he said.

Thousands of railway commuters faced a harrowing time stranded in the various stations during the busy office hours.

Some were seen travelling in pick up trucks and packed buses.

According to eyewitnesses, no announcements were made about the train's arrival.

"The speeding train knocked down the old man when he was crossing the railway track. There were no announcements over the public address system about the train," said Soumojit Chakraborty, a college student who was present at the station during the accident.

"Wrong and absence of announcements about train arrivals is quite frequent here,"
