From Bristol to India - Penniless India Trek Under way

BBC News

Jan 31: A man has started a two-and-a-half year walk from Bristol to India without any money - to show his faith in humanity.

Mark Boyle: "We need to get back to a more communal way of living"

Equipped with only a few T-shirts, a bandage and spare sandals, former dotcom businessman Mark Boyle is set to cross Europe and the Middle East.
On his 9,000-mile trek to Gandhi's birthplace, he will have to pick his way through war-ravaged Afghanistan.

Boyle, 28, said: "I will be offering my skills to people. If I get food in return, it's a bonus"

He says he is part of the free-economy movement - a group which began in the US and aims to bring about a moneyless society.

He said: "My interest started five or six years ago when I was studying economics.

"The more we accumulate wealth, the more it leads to a breakdown of community."

Boyle aims to walk between 15 and 45 miles a day, with the goal of getting to Porbandar on India's west coast.
He plans not to touch any money and is taking no credit cards or travelers' checks.

Traveling light, his rucksack contains just t-shirts, sandals, sunscreen, a knife and a bandage.

"We need to get back to a more communal way of living," he said.

"My mum and dad always speak about a time in Ireland when people came together and took in the harvest together, and no money changed hands."

Asked about how he would manage without money, Mr. Boyle said: "I've got a lot of faith in humanity.

"My friends are really supportive. I'm very lucky. My mum was very supportive but was getting very worried."

Although he will walk nearly all the way, Mr. Boyle has even hatched a plan for when he is forced to cross water - he will explain his mission to ferry staff.

He added: "If that doesn't work, I will simply try again and again.

"If I've got to spend two and a half years to show one person the conviction of what I'm doing, then it's two and a half years well spent."

Boyle plans to give anyone he meets a password, which they can use to enter his website and upload details of his journey.

It is individuals that change the face of history. Capitalism has been the death of fairness worldwide, where the only people benefitting from this system are the rich and powerful. Good luck Mark Boyle there are people all over the world who feel the same way but think they have no real voice, this individual action shows everyone can do something positive.

What a daring adventure! I wish I were as young as Mark is in even thinking of this. Wish you all success, Mark and hope and pray that humanity will come through. When your great cross-Europe and Middle East walk is over and brings you to Porbandar, I hope you will be decorated with a medal by the Indian government for your bravery.

Good wishes and prayers for the courageous man and his venture to show way to the materialistic and pleasure seeking consumeristic fast track quick buck super society. Man we are be on your guard when you pass the perils of civilization that have been taken over by soldiers of satan in the dark valleys to the north west of India. May you find your path smooth and the long road safe. Your faith will set you free....

I am a trEmendous believer of moneyless society like Mr Boyle, a young thinking mind, unlike modern day think tanks of economy. Coming from a family where barter or exchange of sevices to services was a practice to mutual living without any value attached.

This service without money and no monetary value is beyond doubt is service to humanity. No economics of today surpass this basic form of living which does good rather than bad what the modern money system is doing. Its destroying the world creating the rich and the poor losing touch with humanity just like modern technical gadgets like mobiles and SMS, giving up face to face personal interaction with just humans.

Hence people cannot relate anymore. Good going Mr. Boyle its worth the effort. B big salute to you.
