Mangalore, Jan 28: New problems are being confronted owing to the rapidly changing social scenario which social workers should accept as challenges.  Love and positive mental attitude should be the way of life for social work educators and students while dealing with problems and affected, said Bishop Aloysius Paul D`Souza of Mangalore on Monday January 28.

He was addressing the gathering at the three-day 26th Annual National Conference on ‘Challenges for social work education and practice, in the changing social scenario’ which was held at Roshni Nilaya, School of Social Work, here on Monday January 28.

The conference was organized in association with Indian Society of Professional Social Work (ISPSW).

Citing a verse from the Bible he added that cultural differences and communal violence would lead to tension. The social workers should take it as an opportunity to promote peace and harmony, thus gift a healthy society, he added.

Lamenting that the professionally trained workers becoming corporate birds and landing in multi-national companies (MNC), he opined that a professionally trained social worker should be committed to work among the people and for the cause of general public. He was of the opinion that people should not remain mere statistics instead they should be recognized by their names. For that, professionally trained workers should strive in this regard.

PP Shetty, senior general manager, Mangalore Works, BASF inaugurated the conference.

Dr Jacinta D’Souza, chair person of the organizing committee, Dr Rameela Shekhar, organizing secretary and others were present on the occasion.
