Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RD/AF)

Udupi, Jan 27: The Supreme Court (SC) has accepted the petition filed by local residents in connection with the land acquisition process for setting up Nagarjuna Thermal Power plant and issued notices to the state government, Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) and Nagarjuna Power Corporation in this regard.

A press release from Balakrishna Shetty, executive president of Janajagriti Samiti stated that the high court had earlier rejected the petition filed by the local residents, Deju Shetty, Kamalakshi Rao, Narsi Moolyady, Gopi Poojarthy after which they filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court against the high court ruling.  The petitioners alleged that their life-sustaining agricultural land has been forcibly acquired, leaving them without any means of livelihood.

Veteran lawyers, Naganand, Raghavendra Srivatsa, Chandranath Ariga have contested on behalf of petitioners while eminent lawyers, Abhishek Singhvi and Venugopal contested on behalf of Nagarjuna and KIADB, stated the press release.

The release also added, 'It has never been the objective of the Samiti to obstruct every development project in the region but any development should be carried out only after the carry capacity study of the region.'

The release further stated that UNESCO is working hard to get 'world heritage' status to a section of the Western Ghats but it will not be possible with the installation of coal-based power project. 'A project of this kind would bring in complete change of climate with intolerable temperature, high humidity combined with high ground level concentration of various pollutants,' stated the release adding that the project is not sustainable.

It is said beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. But the beauty of our coastal belt lies not in the beholders eyes but also in the region itself. It is regrettable that for some the dry lands of Raichur or Bellary and the beautiful evergreen coastal and Malnad belt look one and the same. The abundance of natural wealth belongs to the whole state.

You can create a coal based plant anywhere but you can not create such a coastal line, such a western ghat or such Malnad everywhere even if you try for generations. Power plants need not be established near the place of consumption as power can be transmitted from any where over long distances. Then where was the need for power plant just in that area?

Let us all pray that the outcome be in tune with the wishes of the lakhs who live here and not those who live for LAKHs(Rs.)

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PETITIONERS.EVEN GOOD WORK DONE BY OUR VETERAN LAWYERS.May God Bless .AND A VERY BIG THANK TO SUPREME COURT JUDGEMENT.RESPECTED BALKRISHNA SHETTY YOU Are DOING A WONDERFUL JOB. Regarding Barren land near Gulbarga or else where in Karnataka will be of no use to our investors and Greedy politicians.

Our Coastal Belt has land Transport/Sea port&Ship yard/Airport etc. So Why they will set up the Industires else where? Our Neighbouring villagers are relaxing and assuming that thier land is safe and expecting Good value in future because of Industires.

They are Reluctant to join the protest march with Rakshana Vedike. If we all udupi district or neighboring district people unite and Join then would be possibilites to bring an end to this deadly coal based Project.jai JanaJagrithi Samithi..

What a relief. We can breathe the fresh air that we are now enjoying rather than the ash filled atmosphere which we would have had if Nagarjuna coal base power project had surfaced this earth. Very important hope the local residents have got their homes and land back and can earn their livelihood from their agricultural land which they had been doing for years. Please do not pollute the beautiful environment of the DK.

First of all Nagarjuna Power coal base power should not have given the green signal to start the work in the green belt area. Coal base power plant pollute the environment as per the available record around the world. There are many dry and barren land like Bellary and Gulbarga to name a few in Karnataka where this kind of project can come up. People of D.K should fight(Non-voilently) against this project for its many negative effect on health and environment.
