PM has done world's biggest impromptu financial experiment: Rahul

Updated

New Delhi, Nov 23 (PTI): Opposition parties today came together to protest against demonetisation outside Parliament, with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi describing it as the world's "biggest impromptu financial experiment" and said they are firm on their demand for a JPC probe into the "scam".

With a united opposition protesting and almost 200 MPs from various parties participating in the discussion, the Prime Minister should explain in Parliament why he took such a decision and why he "leaked" the decision to his industrialist friends and BJP leaders, he said.

"What the PM has done is the biggest impromptu financial experiment in the world. He did not ask anyone. Finance Minister did not know. The Chief economic adviser did not know. This decision is not that of Finance Minister. This is the Prime Minister's decision.

"Prime Minister can give lectures to pop concert where 'naach gaana' is going on. 200 MPs are saying they want to tell the nation why he took this decision. PM does not want to come to Parliament. Why is PM afraid of going inside? He is obviously anxious about something," Gandhi said.

Opposition MPs including those of Congress, SP, BSP, TMC, DMK, CPI, CPI(M) among others were outside Parliament near Gandhi Statue protesting the demonetisation.

"Our demand is that PM represents the country and he should come to Parliament and sit through the entire debate and hear us out and the other opposition leaders.

"We feel there is a scam behind this decision. We feel he informed his own people before and the opposition is firm that it wants a JPC," he said.

Gandhi said a cent percent united opposition was standing outside Parliament and the entire opposition is united, over 200 MPs are standing and the Prime Minister should tell why he has taken this decision.

He said all opposition parties, the Congress party and everybody is for fighting corruption and black money.

The question is, Gandhi said, why have one billion people been "harassed" in this manner. "That's the question. It is a question of complete centralisation of power. I have been saying that the country cannot be run in this manner.

"You have hit the economy, which was running fine. But it is not running the way it was running during UPA, but it was somehow running. You have hit it hard," he said.

He added that the decision has hit the fishermen in Bengal and Kerala and other places, it has finished farmers, labourers.

"Is there any suited-booted person standing in the line or any BJP MLA, MP in the line. Don't they not need money," he said attacking the government. He said Parliament should condole the death of people who died standing in queues outside banks and ATMs.

"It is shame there is no time to condole the death of those who died in the queue. First day there was a condolence but these people's names wre not mentioned."

Asked about Finance Minister M Arun Jaitley’s comment that the Congress should make up its mind about whether or not BJP leadership knew of the decision in advance, Gandhi said, "Ahead of this decision, bank deposits surged drastically.

BJP's organization in Bengal and other states knew of it. FM did not know but the BJP organization knew. BJP's industrialist friends knew."

Asked who is leading the protest, Rahul Gandhi said poor people's voice is leading this protest and MPs are representing that voice.

Babbar, who was lauding the party for bringing down poverty in the country, was asked to explain the Planning Commission’s declaration that anyone who spends more than Rs 33 per day in urban areas is above the poverty line, especially when one meal at the Congress head quarters cost almost twice as much.

    Zeit...

Modi, during his election campaigns, said that there is so much black money hoarded abroad, if it will be brought back, its sufficient to count @ 15 Lakh per Indian. He said that he will bring it back within 100 days from the day BJP comes to power.

Are you looking for a phrase that 'HE WILL DISTRIBUTE' in his comment ? NO, its not there but for a poor illiterate man who went to such rallies, its equal to a promise to get 15 Lakh if he votes for Modi.

Show me, when Modi brought back the money he promised to be bringing back with 100 days from coming to power !

Regardless, the present demonetisation is helping a poor man ? Is Modi remitting any of the amount confiscated in raids into Jan-Dhan accounts ? Instead, the poor man has to stand on line until his (own) last 500 note is converted into a new one. Couldn't the superman PM arrange to call them to a similar rally and give them in exchange the 500/1000 notes ? Eh ?

    Roshan,

    1. Bribe paid and taken in old currency is bribe. But with new currency it is not bribe? Modi wants all Indians to belive that.
    - yes bribes might have taken. but what are the people who have taken the bribes going to do with it unless they it?

    2. Black money. You are spending your money which is all white. If the vendor shows lower income, how can you track by demonitisation? The vendor can continue to do the same as before. Demonitisation has no connection between the creation of black money.
    - No you are wrong over here. There will be other measures that will be taken to reduce the black money.

3 and 4, Anyone who reads news knows what is happening at border.
    - this is a different issue.

Further, it is Modi Govt is telling SC that banks will be able to give loan at cheaper rates. That implies writting off Mallya and Adhani loans.
    - its not wtitting off any loans but they have just made provisions for the same. And issuing of loans and writting it off is done by banks what do the govt have to do with this.

People are loosing their hard earned daily wages for these sharks. Wake up.
    - this is the stupidest think i heard thus far. Seems that people are getting desperate at the attempts to condemn Modi.

the bottom half—be it rural workers, daily wagers, weekly wage earners, or fortnightly wage earners—earn less than Rs1,350 per week. In fact, even the bottom half among the urban population earns at most Rs1,970 per week. Even if the bottom half of the population has saved up to two weeks of their earnings, the amount they have to exchange will be less than the Rs4,000 limit that was set by the government in the first week. The above inference assumes that the daily, weekly or fortnightly wage earners were fully employed in the past several weeks so that they could not only earn enough for their consumption but also to save. In practice, such wage earners are chronically underemployed. As a result, the total cash in the hands of the bottom half is likely to be less than Rs4,000. Thus, it is quite clear from this data that the bottom half of the country’s population would have by now visited the local bank or the local post office at most once to exchange their old currency. In the political battle that has emerged out of the demonetisation exercise, both proponents and opponents are ostensibly defending the interests of the poor. Some politicians are relying on anecdotal evidence to advocate the difficulties being faced by the common man. We instead use data from the National Sample Survey Organization’s (NSSO) survey to estimate such difficulties faced by the poor. The survey provides estimates of earnings in cash and kind by different income categories. We use the survey data for 2011 which comprised approximately 500,000 individuals across the country. Our estimates suggest that the poor are likely to have visited a bank branch at most once to exchange their earnings in the old currency notes to new currency notes. Thus, we infer that the politicians advocating the difficulties faced by the poor are being disingenuous in pushing their claims for political gains.

You hear from people advocating demonitisation, the following

    1. It curbs corruption.
    2. It curbs black money.
    3. It curbs terrorism.
    4. It curbs counterfiet

All money becomes white and black money will disappear from India. Modi has taken a bold step, must be encouraged.

Any patriotic indian would love to hear that. But the tragedy is it is doing exactly the reverse.

    1. Bribe paid and taken in old currency is bribe. But with new currency it is not bribe? Modi wants all Indians to belive that.

    2. Black money. You are spending your money which is all white. If the vendor shows lower income, how can you track by demonitisation? The vendor can continue to do the same as before. Demonitisation has no connection between the creation of black money.

it's a scary situation when such a big force is built to oppose PM's decision which is clear for whole nation ( including opposition ) that it's a major right decision to restrict blackmoney. Instead of supporting this decision and govt on this, whole opposition joined together to stop PM. Indirectly they want to stop this drive against black money. We should ensure PM is supported on this. Or else with the name of common men, these oppositions will try to get their stuff done. Nobody bothered about common men's struggle for decades... when so many people died, so many people stood in queue. Nobody bothered. More over, VIPs were responding like "they need to bear us" indirectly mentioning we have to struggle or suffer. Now when whole nation is ok to stand in the queue for nation's benefit, these buggers taking it as an advantage and trying to stop PM. God only should bless our country with the defeat of the opposition in this plan to stop this demonetization drive.

Lets wait until dec 31st as told by the PM .

The PM is trying to discipline the 80% of the population which depend on the 80% of the cash and now thats cash is disappeared over night .

Please discuss with FM all you need to do is get the black money stashed outside India by politicians and real estate tycoons .

Also industrialist who are over invoicing imports and under invoicing exports .

Rabi crop next year will go down by 50% which will have a very big impact on our GDP

Tax collection for the next three months will see huge losses atleast to the tune of 3 lak crore

Not to say the harassment to bank employees to work day and night to make this happen not sure how much additional money banks are shelling out

cash is only 5% of the economy and used by 85% of the population and none of them have debit or credit card you are asking farmers to walk 20 kms to open an account and go digital when all he strives for is two sqaure meals

Tax collection has hugely increased.the municipal tax collection for the 47 civic bodies had reached Rs 13,192 crore. Last November, the municipalities had collected just Rs 3,607 crore. Mumbai has the maximum share of the increased tax collection at Rs 11,913 crore, which is 90% of the total revenue. This is over three times Mumbai's collection for 2015. However, Hyderabad accounts for the maximum increase — 26 times the tax collection in November 2015. Surat's tax revenue of Rs 100 crore marked a nearly 14-fold increase.
