Delhi's East Kidwai Nagar gets modern social infrastructure

New Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS): Union Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday inaugurated a modern social infrastructure, comprising a shopping complex, senior secondary school and a banquet hall, in East Kidwai Nagar area of south Delhi.

This modern social infrastructure, on which work is still going on, is part of the East Kidwai Nagar General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Redevelopment Project.

"Redevelopment of properties is the way for optimal utilisation of scarce land resource in cities and for generating the required resources. Zero waste generation and zero discharge shall be the guiding principle for smart city development," said the Union Urban Development Minister on the occasion.

Redevelopment of government colonies in a big way in Delhi reflects the central government's approach to improving quality of life and recasting the urban landscape, Naidu added.

Work on East Kidwai Nagar GPRA Redevelopment Project started in December 2014 and is scheduled for completion in November 2019.

However, Naidu directed the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the implementing agency, to complete it by December 2018.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who was also present on the occasion, said: "NDMC area is the nerve centre of governance and shows the way to others. I compliment the team led by Naidu for the path-breaking initiatives for urban development."

Minister of State for Urban Development Rao Inderjit Singh and Urban Development Secretary Rajiv Gauba were also present on the occasion.

This social infrastructure is being built by NBCC at a an estimated cost of Rs 114 crore.

The shopping complex would have ground and two floors with a built-up area of 13,950 sq. metres, having 172 shops with modern facilities for both shopkeepers and consumers, such as Wi-Fi and cashless sales counters in each shop, according to an official.

The N.P. Senior Secondary School would be housed in the ground and four floors, with a built-up area of 8,143 sq. metres.

Modelled as a Smart school, the school would enable computer-aided learning with smart class rooms and laboratories. It would have 13 smart class rooms for VI to XII class students, auditorium, conference room, laboratories with smart features, CCTV cameras in each room and staff room on each floor. The banquet halls would occupy ground and two floors.

The entire construction is being done based on 'green construction' concept, the official said.

The whole infrastructure would run on green energy. Grid-connected roof-top solar systems on the three buildings would generate 250KW of electricity. While 200 KW would be used for the three buildings, the remaining 50 KW would be transferred to the grid.

Parking, housekeeping and maintenance would be completely mechanised, economical, and eco-friendly.
