38 killed from alcohol poisoning in Ukraine

Kiev, Oct 1 (IANS): At least 38 people were killed after they consumed a batch of spurious alcohol circulating across Ukraine, the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection said on Friday.

Citing a statement from the agency, Xinhua reported that 39 other people are still being treated in hospitals and many of them are in critical condition.

"Several people, who survived the poisoning, became blind. I do not rule out that the number of victims may increase further," Vladimir Lapa, the head of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, was quoted as saying.

Poisoning cases began appearing in Ukraine last week, when dozens of people appealed for medical assistance in the eastern Kharkov region due to symptoms of intoxication after drinking alcohol.

This week, the new cases of poisoning were registered among the residents of four other regions and eastern, southern and northern Ukraine.

Four people have been so far arrested in Kharkov region for allegedly producing and distributing the batch of spurious liquor.

The local police confiscated nearly four tonnes of methyl alcohol and technical equipment for producing the toxic drinks from them.

I thought in poor countries only this types of tragedy strikes.
People feel the necessity of liquor in these extremely cold countries to keep themselves warm.
    Poisoning looks like sabotage.

most of east europe and south europe are poor countries.west europe and nordic countries are rich countries.these poor countries are still surviving because of the largessee of european union.once the european union is disintegrated as it is already happening with break away of britain then these poor european countries real status will be out in public.as far as alchohol poisoning is concerned in ukraineit is common knowledge that vodka is common drink in russia, ukraine, poland and other east european countries inorder to keep thier body warm in extreme cold.but the people in these countries like any other poor countries have extreme fixation to alchohol and dont know the alchohol limit where they have to stop.these type of incidents are frequent occurances in russia and east european countries.similar incidents are reported in russian medias like russia today etc.

I haven't heard anyone saying Kerala is in somalia.
If you are referring to Modiji's speech in Kerala, he said," the female infanticide rate in some tribal area is so high as equal to Somalia."
