M'lore-B'lore Train: Private Operators Suffer

Newindpress

Mangalore, Dec 22: The worst fears of bus operators have come true. In spite of inconvenient arrival, departure timings and the marathon 12-hour journey, Mangalore-Yeshwantpur train is the most favoured mode of travel for passengers from coastal region.

Mangalore-Yeshwantpur train launched from December 8 has given private tourist bus operators a run for their money. While train chugs along with its 16 coaches packed with passengers, over 100 tourist buses have been plying with a handful of passengers.

Private bus operators admit that the start of train services between Mangalore and Bangalore has hit them. But the train has failed to attract high-end customers who still opt for Volvo buses.

From my experience, I have found bus operators and their agents to be an unscrupulous lot. If they had any business ethics and scruples, they would stick to set fares and not hike it simply because it is a rush season like Divali, Eid, Christmas or New Year.

Business ethics calls upon businessmen to have a commitment to society by providing good service at a fair and reasonable profit and not looting people by taking advantage of situations or due to shortages. Not only this, in spite of the so-called luxury coach, the drivers and cleaners and probably the bus service managements may be in collusion, because they take some eight to 10 passengers to fill up all the places besides the drivers cabin, etc. and pocket the money.

Further, they halt at places where there are ramshackle, wayside restaurants or dhabas, where probably they get free meals and commissions for bringing in business to these miserable places. These restaurants overcharge or, shall we say, loot the hapless passengers and dish out some crap.

Now that the Mangalore - Bangalore train service has been started they will certainly face the music. Who is to be blamed for this? Certainly, the bus operators. Anyway, they have made hay while the sun shines and with many of them it may have been rags to riches stories.

I agree with the comments of a reader that train travel by a reserved compartment is anyday far better and comfortable then being glued to a seat, whether it is a Volvo, Mercedes, Tata or Leyland bus.

It appears that the public are travelling in train with a vengeance against the private bus lobby who many believe were responsible for undue delay of the particular railway line, cancellation of popular Janashathabdi Express from Mumbai etc.

However if good roads are put in place buses have a better chance because of their point to point pickup and service- so the bus lobby has to put pressure for better roads which will definitely bring back the glory to their business.

I dont agree with you about High end customers will opt for Volvo buses, I have travelled in a volvo from Mangalore to Bangalore & come back by train , I  would prefer anytime train compared to the bus, especially the two tier a/c. Atleast you are not glued to the seat.
