Manipur High Court gets new Chief Justice


Imphal, Sep 22 (IANS): Justice Rakesh Ranjan Prashad was on Thursday sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

Governor Najma Heptullah administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Prashad. 

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and judges and lawyers both from Manipur and other states were present in the function held at the Raj Bhavan here. 

Prashad is the third Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, which became a full fledged high court from March 13, 2013. 

Born in Bihar on July 1, 1955, Prashad studied in Patna Law College. In 2001 he became a judge in Jharkhand. He has been the acting Chief Justice of Manipur High Court for some time.

The Chief Justice told the media: "Manipur has become my second home. I am happy to be appointed the Chief Justice. My immediate job is to clear the heavy backlog of pending cases. My priority is to ensure justice to the poor."
