Denied treatment, Chhattisgarh woman carrying dead foetus dies

Korba, Sep 21 (PTI) : In an appalling incident, a 22-year-old pregnant woman, carrying a dead foetus, died of infection in Chhattisgarh's Korba district allegedly after doctors at various private hospitals denied to attend her as she was unable to pay their fees.

As the issue came into light, Korba district Collector P Dayanand constituted three-member team to probe the incident.

The woman identified as Saraswati Mahant died on Monday night at a private hospital here at Rajgamar road, the Collector said.

A native of Podibahar village under Rampur police station, Gulabdas Mahant had taken his wife Saraswati to Jamunadevi Memorial Maternity private hospital on Monday following she complained of severe pain in her stomach.

The woman was told at the hospital during a scan that her eight-month old foetus had died.

"Doctors at Jamunadevi hospital advised to get the foetus removed and asked for a fees of Rs 10,000. Besides they also asked to arrange blood for my wife," Gulabdas said.

"Doctors stopped her treatment when I told them that I am arranging money. Even after my request they refused to treat her," he said holding the doctor responsible for the death of his wife.

According to Gulabdas, he later took her wife to atleast three private hospitals in the area but nowhere doctors agreed to operate upon the lady.

Finally at Srishti Medical Institute hospital, doctors said that they would operate on the woman next day but she died at around 11:30 on Monday night.

As the issue was raised by local media, Collector P Dayanand ordered a probe into it.
A three-member team headed by Additional Collector Heena Netam has been formed to investigate the incident, the Collector said.

Korba Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr P S Sisodia and District Family Welfare and Health Officer Dr B P Kurre are other members of the enquiry squad.

Stringent action would be taken against anyone found guilty after the probe, the Collector added.

Modi is the first PM to reduce Education and Health budget, which is already one of the lowest in the world by per capita. Condition of govt hospitals is very pathetic today. Many hospitals in Maharashtra do not admit patients due to no supply of medicines and only those who can bring medicines from out are admitted. Same may be the case in Chattisgarh. This is as per Times of India report.

May her and the child soul rest in peace.

Only her soul know how much she suffered. We all will talk and listen our political leaders speeches. If one cow was denied treatment these useless groups could have done all type of drama but here no one bothered. Very sad.....Do we need such political leaders to rule us....

I am shocked to hear such a tragic and unfortunate incident. My God really a human life is not worth ?Why should probe now?Till the probe come to end, year or months go by.First instead of all this probe, put a heavy fine to all hospitals where this Lady visited and was denied. Then start your investigations.Doctors should be dismissed with immediate effect. What oath they had taken during their graduation? To save a life or let one die?So sorry for the Family.and may her Soul rest in peace.Medicine is not any more a fine Profession for certain People.Only a Gold grube.Specially People in North are extreme sufferers due to poverty.why there is no Govt.hospital where People can go Treatment?why rush to private hospitals and lack of Money die?

Cows and Dogs life is more precious in India.
Somebody will at least fight for their rights.
If sympathizers help poor humans, they would be falsely accused, branded, and victimized by enemies of humanity!
Humans dyeing is fine with them, no issues, but not helping.
Accusers will twist the facts and strongly mobilize public support against helpers and defame them, but they themselves will never help and ensure that no one else will help poor humans.

If anyone is still under the impression that medical profession has traces of humanity left in it, they are grossly mistaken. Right from the production to the prescription of a drug including going under the knife, it's pure business, not just in India but all over the world. In the developed world there's atleast social security to take care of the expenses to some extent but in our country ache din is only a mirage.

Poverty is a curse on humans. Today medical, education, religious institutions are money minting machines.

Medical seats are sold for crores and how one can expect, people are treated with compassion? When a sick person enters hosphital, if his pocket is not thick enough, then he is automatically categorized as gunie pig for testing. If he survives he is lucky, dies then the certificate get issued as brain dead even before reaching hospital.

People are busy fighting for beef, caste, culture, state...
Politics wants it and today, BJP wants it desperately, as they have nothing to prove.

    God save the country.

this is the development under modi's acche din programmes. now the govt. will expect any gulf king will help this family. Recently expenses of funeral of of woman in orissa paid by Bahrain king. This poor picture of india we show to the world. modi/bjp government neglected all welfare programmes for the poor. even in last union budget the fund allotted for education is decreased.all direct and indirect taxes systematically increased making more burden to common people.by giving rosy picture of GDP in the media he wanted to cheat the people of this country.he only helps two business houses whose names are blacklist for looting the public money.

What is the use of action, the women is dead already. This is the effect of Commercialization of Educational and Medical Field. Students and Patients are Milking Cow. Blaming Teachers and Doctors will not help, it their bread and butter. It is Govt. who should invest in every field in such a way, that it benefits common people. If basic needs of Citizens is guaranteed, then hunger for acquiring more will subside. But who care, we have committees which will be set and things will be forgotten.

In India, unfortunately some selfish religious leaders fight for Conversion, beating people in the name of cow protection, beef etc. where as no body including so called hospitals who are supposed to do noble service, to save human beings have no love for our own citizens.

Disgusting. This is the true face of our own Country and our own people's attitude.
