Udupi, Dec 17:  Journalists should not be depressed at the present state of affairs in media. It is they themselves who have to give strength to the fourth pillar, senior journalist Linganna Sathyampete has said.

He was speaking at a seminar on ‘Mass Media’ organised at the 74th Akhila Bharatia Kannada Sahitya Sammelan here on Saturday. Another senior journalist Sashidhar Bhat delivering a talk on Electronic Media said: “Visual media is growing, neglecting cultural aspects.’’

He said journalism institutions do not have subjects like culture, political history or history of different movements in their syllabus. They simply teach technical aspects.

‘’Media persons without the knowledge of literature, history and culture are a threat to media’’, he said. In his presentation on Audio media, G M Shirahatti stressed the need of a surgery for media.

He agreed with experts on visual media becoming a brothel without walls. He said: “Though we had a listening culture, the Radio suffered by falling in controls of private administrators.’’ No attempt had been made to recognise oral literature.

Speaking on Media and Social Changes, Deepak Thimmaiah said that unless media developed sensitivity, it could not reform the society. Gangadhar Hiregutthi spoke on print media.
