President, Vice President greet people on Onam


New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari on Tuesday greeted the people on Onam, the festival which marks the homecoming of mythical King Mahabali.

In his message, Mukherjee said: "I extend Onam greetings to all fellow countrymen, especially my brothers and sisters hailing from Kerala, living both in India and abroad."

"Onam is a festival celebrated by people of all religion, caste and community with equal joy, underlying the secular fabric of our society. May this auspicious festival signifying the spirit of harmony, thanksgiving and optimism bring happiness and prosperity to all sections of our people."

Vice President Ansari also wished people on the festival.

"I extend my warm greetings and good wishes to the people of our country on the auspicious occasion of Onam," Ansari said.

"Onam marks the beginning of the harvest season in various parts of our country especially in the Southern states. Celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm Onam reflects the central role of agriculture in our society," the Vice President said.

"May the festival usher in peace, prosperity and happiness in our country," he added.
