M'lore: Delay in Concreting, Temporary Solutions Sought

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (KM)

Mangalore, Dec 13: It is true that the road is being concreted in order to ensure the durability and good condition in all weathers, but it does not mean that it can cause grave inconvenience to the people of the locality, said Yogish Bhat, former MLA here on Wednesday December 12.

He was addressing the agitators at the agitation staged demanding the quick execution of concreting of road stretching between Bejai New Road to KSRTC.

Terming the agitation an eye opener, he said it is regrettable fact that all the aspects necessary to ensure safety of the locality are not considered while carrying out the work.

The sharp edged rods that have surfaced have become fatal as there is an increased chance of children hurting themselves. Even this may turn fatal to senior citizens, children and women in the wake of wanting of lamp posts.

The potholes must be filled, the deep gaps between the concrete pavements have turned to be fatal, and there is an urgent need to level the concrete pavements and footpath otherwise children may fall into the ditch, Jagadish, an agitator said.

The issue has been raised in three consecutive meetings, but the authority is reluctant to give serious thought to the pains of the people. Neither engineer nor contractor is ready to take responsibility; rather they blame each other and try to escape.  The work should be carried out immediately, otherwise massive protest is imminent, Agnel, an agitator, said.

Gopal Gowda, assistant executive engineer, assured that leveling of roads would be carried out immediately.

Rupa D Bangera, Praveen, KP Tailor, other corporators and BC Prakash, assistant engineer were present on the occasion.

At last someone has woken up to the problems of the common man, the old, sick, infirm and the children who have to pass the roads being concretised. It is a known fact that all roadwork contracts have a clause that a proper alternative roadway must be provided by the contractor AND maintained by him throughout the period of work.

Is that being provided- NO Bejai/KSRTC is an example. Another glaring example is the road to the airport between Maryhill and Kavoor via Bondel- is has been a real mess for the last two years and continues to be so. JUST LOOSE MUD SHOVED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD THAT IS A REAL NGHTMARE WHAT WITH THE TRAFFIC AND THE SPEEDING BUSES TOO.

The authorities should stop payment/penalise the contractor if they do not stick by their contract terms of providing a safe, proper alternative passage for pedestrians/vehicles. I was told by a resident that they had to keep quiet as the job was being done by the KARNATAKA LAND ARMY ( thinking they were part of the Indian Army???).
