Mangaluru, Aug 25: Several BJP workers gathered at Mangaluru international airport and at Kenjaru Circle to protest against actress turned politician Ramya who arrived in city on Thursday, August 25.
BJP workers who congregated near Kenjaru circle held protest condemning the statement made by Ramya where she praised the Pakistan people’s hospitality. The protestors also demonstrated black flags.
Ramya was seen outside the airport with U T Ifthikar and Mithun Rai. Police provided protection to her and paved way for her to move to the car. But some BJP members were heard hurling abuses at the police personnel. About 5 persons were detained at the airport.
Later when Ramya arrived at Kenjaru, the big gathering of protestors shouted slogans against her and some people also threw eggs at her car. But convoy of cars did not stop and went towards city.
Former MLC Monappa Bhandary, Jitendra Kottary and Harish Punja from Yuva Morcha were among the protestors. Police here also detained around six persons.
Ramya has come to city to participate in a private Mosaru Kudike programme.
Ramya was in Pakistan recently and she had said that Pakistan is not hell as some people said in India. Her comments attracted widespread protests in the state especially from BJP.
Ramya refuses to apologise
"When I landed in Mangalore, eggs were hurled at me, black flags shown; I won't take my words back, I am not worried" tweeted Ramya after she reached the city making her stance clear that she is not going to apologise and will stick to her statement.
Mangaluru is good place, says Ramya
Ramya was at Unity hospital in city to see someone. After her visit, she interacted with the media and said “Mangaluru is a good place. It is like heaven. There are good people in Mangaluru. They take selfies with me. I never called Mangaluru hell as reported in some media. It was claimed that I made that remark while talking to a TV channel. It was misquoted.”
“I love Mangaluru so much that I started my election campaign from here. Why Should I call Mangaluru hell?” she questioned.
Speaking on her comment on Pakistan, she said “I only said what I saw and experienced in Pakistan when asked about it. Media misquoted my statement. I will fight the sedition charges in the court with the help of lawyers. There can be competition among you (media). But media should not twist the statements.”
