Mangalore, Sept 9: Mangalore City is gearing up for another volatile election. As per the schedule of the election commission, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) elections will be held on September 28.

Sadananda Poonja, vice-president of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC) stated at a press meet held here on Sunday, September 9, that the Congress party has already appointed election observers to look into the various matters pertaining to the coming MCC and Town Panchayat, Municipality and other elections to be held in the district.

With regard to the nomination of the candidates for MCC elections he stated preference will be given for those who are highly service motivated, those with excellent background and having a sense of loyalty towards the party. Moreover, young fresh blood will be given preference this time. Meanwhile, those who were earlier denied an opportunity, will be given a chance this time, he informed.

A total of 292 candidates applied for 60 seats in MCC for Congress ‘B’ forms. The primary level selection will be done at the block levels. The district selection committee will finalize the candidates’ list before September 14. This list will be sent to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) for approval, Poonja added.

Poonja has been handling the day-to-day official matters of the party, as per the instructions of the DCC president Blasius D’Souza. He will head this responsibility until the newly chosen DCC president Ramanath Rai takes charge. The tenure of Rai will begin before the commencement of MCC elections, informed Poonja.

Former corporator Naveen D’Souza and Ullal block Congress president Ishwar Ullal were present at the press meet.
