Udupi , Sep 8:  The district-level ‘Best Teacher Award’  was given to 10 teachers from the district, at the Teacher Day celebration organised under the banner of the Udupi District-Level Teachers Day Celebration Committee, held here recently.

Speaking after presenting the awards, the District- in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya exhorted the teachers to serve at least five years in rural and remote areas.

Acharya said that the Education minister had already set in motion some measures to streamline the existing system, in which teachers were not willing to teach in rural schools. The rule of' one teacher per 35 students' is going to come", he informed.

He further stated that in order to ease the problem of teachers serving in the rural areas, government was thinking in terms of building housing quarters for teachers, and for the government was willing to spend Rs 1,000 crore, he declared.

"Once the rural and remote schools get sufficient teachers, the educational institutions there will get developed, more and more get educated. Thereby the menace prevalent in the foothills of Western Ghats can be curbed", Acharya added.

Zilla Panchayat president B N Shankar Poojary presided over the programme and honoured the retired teachers. Probationary assistant commissioner Kumar delivered a guest lecture. Dharmadarshi of Ambalpady Janardana and Mahakali temple, Dr N B Vijay Ballal released the collection of poems by teachers 'Kavya Sinchana'. Deputy director of Public Instructions, K Anand welcomed the gathering. Block Education officer D Manjunathiah proposed the vote of thanks. Adwe Ravindra Poojary compered the programme.
