Bodies floating on Ganga: NGT slams Centre, UP govt

New Delhi, Jan 19 (India Today) : The long-neglected issue of disposing dead bodies in the Ganga, a practice sanctioned by Hindu rituals, was brought to the notice of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday.

Over 3,000 human bodies are immersed into the holy river just in Varanasi, every year, for salvation. These corpses float by as daily prayers, bathing, cooking and washing go on unabated on the river ghats.

This puts innocent lives at risk besides creating a breeding ground for diseases and epidemic, it was pointed out to the environmental court.

The judicial bench, headed by chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar, called the practice "unfortunate" and also criticised the BJP-led central government saying, "Your slogans are very contrary to your actions." Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious 'Namami Gange' programme, `2,037 crore have been allocated to bring the Ganga back to its pristine state. Modi himself has in the past picked up the shovel to clean the ghats of Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency.

Recently, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti had also inaugurated sewage treatment systems in Hapur district, Uttar Pradesh, to prevent the filth from being drained into the Ganga. The NGT also flayed the UP government for its negligence.

The issue was brought up as part of the ongoing petition of Anil Kumar Singhal, a water quality expert. Singhal has prayed that Ramganga, a significant tributary of Ganga, be freed of waste emanating from brass factories along UP's Moradabad. His counsel, Gaurav Bansal, on Monday, submitted pictorial evidence to NGT of bloated corpses on the river and vultures feeding on them. He argued that Ganga cannot be clean until this practice is banned.

Justice Kumar responded, "It is really very unfortunate that such things are going on. Why don't you do something about this?" He pulled up the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and also asked the UP government to deal with the issue expeditiously.
Counsel, Gaurav Bansal, said, "We have found that no less than 3,000 human bodies and 6,000 animal carcasses are dumped into the Ganga each year. These may have died of dangerous diseases and obviously carry pathogens, bacteria and virus which are contaminating the river. Those who come in contact with the water can fall seriously ill."

"There are also various Supreme Court directions for municipal corporations to stop this practice, but nothing is being done on the ground," he said. Petitioner Anil Singhal has submitted various reports to the tribunal to prove that the river is highly polluted.
The issue of dead bodies in Ganga last came into spotlight on January 14, 2015, when over 100 such corpses mysteriously washed up near Pariyar between Kanpur and Unnao. The district administration blamed it on the Hindu custom of not burning unmarried girls, children and people dying of snake bites.

The BJP accused the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) while SP leader Azam Khan said it was a conspiracy by the saffron party to defame it.

As cow slaughter has been banned to protect the sentiments of people so too it is only fair that traditional and cultural requirements such as the release of dead bodies and carcasses as well as other rituals be allowed to be continued unhindered. The opinion of the majority should always be respected!!

If we have Hindu Rituals that help environment pollution, who can stop it? Who is responsible for this practice & who will stop this? Let us now see, who will " Bell the Cat " ! It is time Govt acts on promises given to us during and after elections.

PM Modi went upto Paris Climate Summit to assure the world that his government will do everything in his capacity to ensure pollution free environment. ca Girish,

No, not at all wrong on RSS/Karsevak's part to support cleansing schemes. But, please explain me, how correct is it to pollute in one hand and use up people's funds to clean up the mess ? Isn't it equal to eat what is not agreeing with us and puke it ? Nobody can live in the puke so it needs to be cleaned. Why care is not take before eating the unwanted ?

Similarly, we know since decades that the condition of Ganga is getting deteriorated, it needs to be controlled. True - pilgrimage can't be stopped. Why the keepers of temples in this region not taking care of the mess left behind by the devotees ? Employ adequate services and charge the visitors for the services ? Why the government is required to take measures ?
Now, don't tell me its government's job to do it because the temples are giving taxes. You need to calculate meagre amount paid to the government as taxes. Actually the money is minted by local shops, motel/hotels, auto/cab runners, tour operators or other service providers. Make everybody responsible - not fortune builders !

RSS/Karsevaks are responsible also in keeping a place dear to them clean, not only in inviting government schemes ! Rather, the funds must come from the temple coffers - not government !

The best approach would be what ever has happened , has happened. This ritual has to stop, ,there is no other way out. Stop throwing corpses into the river. The Govt has to issue a new directive. Rahul Khandi would shout 'Ganga is not clean , what happened' & Modi & his Bakths would repond 'What have you done for 60 years?' .No solution.

we hired municipal people to bring and spread the waste papers and leaves at wee hours and we arrived at 8 am with journalists.
There could be a possibility that swatch Bhrath team hired someone to float the dead bodies and then planned to go there with Media team And rival media reached before that.

As per the limited knowledge I have, the remains of a Hindu is supposed to be offered to fire. Once the remains are reduced to ashes, the ashes are to be immersed in holy rivers. Who says the ritual is to toss dead body into the river ?

I understand the dead bodies that are tossed in the river are of those pilgrims who take up one last pilgrimage in old-age, never to return to their family. Those who die in such situation, do not have their kin to fund their last rites and this is the reason a half-burnt body is tossed in the river.

What I say is why opt to wood based burning ? Why not go for electric crematorium ? We are talking about development, digitalization, why can't we also dedicate some time to enlighten people about changes in our lifestyle ?

It was those days when population was less and wood fire abundant. A number of pyres could be arranged in a day but now the density of humans is more than that of trees. Why can't we adopt to cremation as per today's afford ?

    Amith,

What is your opinion about the problems if National Green Tribunal was not at all a reference ? Will you, being a native of Karnataka, be taking seriously the pollution of a river that is flowing right in the north of the country or live on as if nothing wrong is happening ?

Having a broader state of mind to question the Tribunal, will have equal sense of responsibility to question why so much of funds dedicated to cleans the river ? Will you at any time protest the sources that are polluting or just pretend no damage is causing at all ?

For some section of the society, the river is sacred but to others it is like any other natural resource. Whereas, the pollution is coming from sacred side itself ! At-least those who consider it sacred, should care to keep it clean from the dirt that is flowing out from their own premises/practices ? Then, the government could easily control the polluting industries around it.

However, the moment one talks against religious pollution he will be branded anti-religion ! Agree - so far it was non-BJP government that was not stern enough to venture into this zone, what's the problem now ? Does the BJP government too fears about being branded anti ?

HAve you understand why I told like that? Did I told anywhere that pollution should carry on? Do you know from how many years its getting polluted? Our Supreme court and and its tribunals only there to find mistakes? they don't have any responsibility?
