With Ladakh freezing, cold wave to intensify in Kashmir


Srinagar, Jan 12 (IANS): Cold wave continued across the Kashmir on Tuesday as the Met Office said its intensity is likely to intensify in the days to come.

"Because of clear night sky the present cold wave condition in the (Kashmir) valley is likely intensify further as we expect weather to remain dry during the next 24 hours," a meteorological department official told IANS on Tuesday. 

"The minimum temperature was minus 0.8 in Srinagar today (Tuesday) while it was minus 2.1 in Pahalgam and minus 6.0 in Gulmarg. Leh town recorded minus 13.1 and Kargil minus 14.1 as the minimum temperatures today," the official added.

The official also said the minimum temperature was 8.6 in Jammu city, 8.2 in Vaishno Devi base camp town of Katra, 4.5 in Batote, 1.3 in Bannihal, 1.6 in Bhaderwah and 4.4 in Udhampur towns of Jammu region of the state.

The 40-day period of intense cold 'Chillai Kalan' that commenced on December 21 will end on January 31.
