Now, Congress trains guns on BJP son-in-law Puneet Gupta

New Delhi, Jan 11 (India Today) : While the BJP has often been targeting Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, it has been overlooking allegations against Puneet Gupta the son-in-law of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh.

Gupta's name has surfaced in a recent tape where he allegedly pays off Congress leaders to win their support in a crucial bypoll in the state. The Congress has expelled lawmaker Amit Jogi over the incident and has now trained guns at Gupta. "We have expelled our leader. Will the BJP now act against its leaders, who are involved in corruption," Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

"The incident is a proof that BJP leaders, including its CM, are dealing in black money. Why is the PM not taking any action now or the BJP promises are only jumlas?" said Congress state unit chief Bhupesh Bhagel, while demanding action against Gupta.

"The government should file an FIR against Gupta. The Congress is demanding an SIT probe into the issue," he added. Surjewala took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim of not tolerating corruption and said why was no action taken against Raman Singh.

The leaked tape suggested that the money changed hands which facilitated the BJP candidate's victory in the 2015 Antagarh bypoll. The Congress has even approached the Election Commission to declare the said poll null and void.

Sources said the controversy has caused concern among the BJP bosses as it has come at a time when the Congress seems to be improving in the tribal state.

On the other hand, the BJP has been consistent in targeting Robert Vadra by raising the issue of his controversial land deals in Rajasthan and Haryana, both of which are ruled by the saffron party but have made little progress in probing the matter.

The BJP claims Gupta is a private citizen but so is Vadra. Moreover, Gupta is said to wield lot of influence in the Chhattisgarh government and has been accused of striking deals on behalf of the CM.

The Congress had earlier demanded sacking of Raman Singh in connection with a multi-crore PDS scam saying that the CM and his family members were direct beneficiaries. "Gupta has he been provided with four guards. He can freely walk inside the secretariat and can indulge in such dealings on BJP's behalf," said a state Congress leader.

That's what they say, but certainly don't 'think' that way. If they thought their leaders were honest, the much hyped Gold deposit scheme would have amassed much more than a meager 400 grams against a target of 20k tonnes. There's a great deal of difference between preaching and practicing. The gold scheme fiasco clearly manifests that even 31% have lost the faith!

This is the newest 'damaad' of BJP but not the first. Much before Vadra came into picture there was another 'damaad' of India whom BJP protected and hid quite well. Ranjan Bhattacharya was epicentre of power during none other than Vajpayee's PM tenure. The foster son-in-law of Vajpayee, Ranjan pulled strings from background while ABV was PM of our country. While Vadra's flamboyance and Page 3 habits put him in spotlight from those who are gunning the Gandhi family, Ranjan maintained a low profile and evaded popularity which in fact proved to be his perfect shield despite indulging in mass irregularities and favouritism.
Ranjan reportedly had a more than important role to play in number of deals and Vinod Mehta’s the Outlook reported this as cover story which irked powers in 7 Race Course Road then and resulted in series of IT raids on proprietor of the Outlook.
The biggest of the deals was the Rs 58,000-crore national highways project which was mooted and pushed by the PMO. Part of the contracts had been awarded to a clutch of seven dubious Malaysian firms with which Ranjna's name was associated. The Rs 20,000-crore Reliance Hirma power project also bore testimony to Ranjan's influence. He and the PMO were pushing the Reliance case for a counter guarantee which amounted to a gift for Reliance. Ranjan's name also featured in UTI scam and sale of government hotels but then he was again provided with 'PMO' immunity. In fact the PMO had decided to allow a telecom policy, allegedly pushed through by India's biggest industrial houses, which had led NDA ally Samata Party writing to the PM seeking to check Bhattacharya's influence.
However, Ranjan quietly vanished once his father-in-law lost power and faded away from the political limelight. But the Niira Radia tapes revealed his influence and his role and Kejriwal dragged him again in spotlight. The power centres in BJP are quite aware that Ranjan's cupboard has same number of skeletons, if not more, that of Vadra.
