Bihar govt website says Indira's rule was worse than British

Patna, Jan 11 (PTI): A Bihar government website has said that Indira Gandhi's rule was worse than that of the British, angering Congress which is a constituent of the ruling coalition.

The mention about "autocratic rule" of Indira Gandhi and "oppression" perpetrated during the Emergency has been made in a write up on Bihar's history.

The write-up, while mentioning about contribution of Jay Prakash Narayan or JP to modern Indian history, says, "It was he who steadfastly and staunchly opposed the autocratic rule of Indira Gandhi and her younger son, Sanjay Gandhi.

"Fearing people's reaction to his (JP's) opposition, Indira Gandhi had him arrested on the eve of declaring National Emergency beginning June 26, 1975. He was put in the Tihar Jail, located near Delhi, where notorious criminals are jailed.

"Thus, in Free India, this septuagenarian (JP), who had fought for India's freedom alongside Indira Gandhi's father, Jawahar Lal Nehru, received a treatment that was worse than what the British had meted out to Gandhiji in Champaran in 1917, for his speaking out against oppression."

Angered over this, state Congress leader Chandan Yadav said the references are "totally unacceptable" and that his party will raise the issue with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

A senior official said it will be got checked.

    The present Bihar Govt. website depicting Indira Gandhi in bad light is not at all surprising. Even though Congress is one the constituents of the now ruling Grand Alliance the poor, illiterate people of the Hindi speaking belt, including Bihar, have suffered the most during the emergency, more so due to the Goonda Raj of Sanjay Gandhi who enjoyed a freehand in all affairs. As a result the Congress was totally washed out in U.P. and Bihar in the historic election of 1977. Today’s very same senior leaders of JDU & RJD who have now allied with Congress only for the sake of power, had in those days vehemently opposed emergency and the autocratic rule of Indira Gandhi and were jailed for opposing her. As the saying goes, “rajniti mein na koi dost hota hai, na koi dushman,” aptly suits here.

    Of course Congressmen Madwaraj has spoken the truth to collect money for Congress fund. Soniaji herself asked publicly to M.P.'s to donate money for Congress Fund.

    I agree that Indira Gandhi had courage, charishma and so many personal traits you expect in a leader. However retrospectively, you analyse what she has achieved. India's strategically planned 1971 - a big plus. Garibi Hatao slogan - fail. Understanding what Zia-Ul-Haq was planning - a big failure (Punjab and Kashmir issues, Taliban, the results are still there to see) - a big fail. Spreading banks to rural areas - success. Economic policy - failure until PVN Rao took over... and so on. The biggest of them all is institutionalizing of Corruption!

    Pak insurgents would have learnt a lesson? LOL. Punjab insurgency started after Congress came back to power in 1980 - Indira propped Bhindranwale before that. Kashmir militancy started in mid-eighties when Congress was ruling. The flash point was removal of a elected government by Rajiv government. And Mumbai attack happened during Congress rule.

    If you don't learn from history you are destined to fail. Also i don't agree with the congress philosophy, they have to move away from dynasty rule. Find a leader who is actually a knowledgeable and has the characteristics to lead a country. The congress looks like a joke right now. Also us people should stop voting based on our religion(most people do this), the parties also should stop targeting people based on their religion. That's the only way we will move forward as a nation.

    The cause for which emergency was d was a grave aberration. But those who experienced emergency rule of Ms Indira Gandhi would appreciate that there was no corruption, government officials were in office on time, there was development taking place in India, and no strikes.Family planning measures of Mr Sanjay gandhi brought a bad name to Ms Indira as it was carried out ruthlessly. Imprisonment of political leaders and press censorship also were serious blunders. But for these errors and misuse of power by the Police force (Rajan case etc) emergency at times is required to curb corruption and bring in speedy development. When a patient is suffering from terminal illness Chemotherapy is required even though it is painful. Having Emergency without imprisonment of political leaders (except for offences as per procedure established by law), an independent judiciary and Free Press will ensure good governance if it is for a short period.

    Completely wrong. Corruption started in mass scale by Indira's cronies during emergency. Media coined the term "institutionalizing of corruption" under Indira's rule. Even at village level, I remember congress goondas were fleecing money for not implicating people.

    The Indians who know the history and Know JP will never forget Indira for what she did to JP and so many freedom fighters who did not agree with India's principles of working.

    I remember the acts of Indira months before and after declaring emergency in 1975. All she did was to protect her as she was power hungry, her raudy natured son Sunjay and currently so called 'Gandhi' family members.

    This 'Gandhi' surname misguided all poor people of India. Look at the overall percentage of people voting! It is between 48 to 58%. People understand our Indian dirty politics and do not even vote because they have to line up for 3-4 hrs. And they do not want to make it easy by declaring the elections on a working day etc.

    This Indira, Sanjay, Rajiv, Sonia, Priyanka and Rahul only survive/Survived because our innocent people thought and believed that this family is related to Mahatma Ghandhi.

    Indira was a very, very bad PM, Arrogant, Selfish, Criminal as she was responsible for so many mis-acts and mismanagement.

    I think what Modi said is true. We should have Gandhi (Indira Fly) mukth India.

    After Allahabad Court nullified Indir's election from Rai Barali, instead of resigning her MP seat: she imposed emergency, suspended constitution, imprisoned all the recognized politicians without any valid reason, re-structured Supreme Court with her judges, distanced herself from western democracies, heavily embraced Soviet Union and Soviet installed dictators as her political ally(s)/friends which has back-scaled India's progress by at least 50 years, Created hostile neighbors, forced Nasbandi on elderly men and targeted particular religious community, interfered in religious affairs of every religion in India,(she suggested Catholic Bishop's Conference of India to seek her government's permission to nominate Bishops in India, as a good will..., and few of our Mangalorean Congress Catholic leaders were very very happy of this suggestion!!!), Indian media, AIR, Doordarshan were her tools of political propaganda, projected Sanjay Gandhi as her successor by imposing her 20 point programme and esteemed youth leader Sanjay gandhi's Ten Point programme, demoralized working and labor class by controlling unions, corruption was at peak, freedom of speech never existed, carried out dozens of constitutional changes/ amendments (which were nullified by Janata Government), suspended/ overthrown democratically elected State governments, Changed Congress Chief ministers as if they were jokers... and the list goes on to pages...

    Indira never liked Indian Legacy... She just followed western model... Only daring act she did was Liberation of Bangladesh. She had enough capacity to reoccupy POK but why she set herself back only she knows.. POK still a wound can't be cured.

    Don't worry pictures of Gujarat 2002 are also available. Pictures of Babu Bajrangi, Maya Kodnani etc.

    Pictures from Dadri are also expected.

    Care to know the truth of Gujarat 2002 and the aftermath subversion of justice ? I dont think some are interested in that.

    It can happen anywhere absolute power corrupts absolutely.It has started with present Govt. too. Trend is same methods are different. Any Govt. supported by RSS, you can imagine that witin next three years become more harmful than any amount of Indira or emergency rule. Novice people must watch and see.

    Irrespctive of that yet she was the bravest PM at all times nationally and internationally.

    Webiste and its followers need to read her achievements too where UK Govt then credited her with her achievements and assimilated her socio-eco plans.
