Mangalore, Aug 30: The state government’s efforts to set up a Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) here, has been termed as an unilateral decision and an undemocratic step by the NGO Okkuta, declared Renny D’Souza president of the Okkuta, in a press release on Tuesday August 28.

Questioning the timing of announcement of the project, D’Souza opined that Bhat should not have announced such a project before subjecting the line estimate and executive summary of the project to public hearing.

The Okkuta will gather police support and oppose the project, he informed.

Such a huge project will have an impact on the environment, livelihood, distribution of water, land use pattern and many other issues, the release declared critically and added that the Okkuta deems it necessary to bring every aspect (of the same) to the knowledge of the public through a proper public hearing.

The people of Mangalore and Udupi District to think and act now only. If this project comes as per the news, after the completion of the same the resident of Mangalore will have to use toilet paper for their daily use.(No water from Nathravathi thereafter to our use)

They may wear Gas masks to avoid pollution or ready to suffer from asthama. They have to import fish either from Goa,Tamilnadu or Kerala and the present fisherman community may to opt other jobs. The Konkani and Tulu culture and language will go to the history.

Though there is inflated figure of jobs ie 10 lakhs any one can find how many people got jobs in MRPL, MCF, Port trust in Panambur, Konkan railway. The places like Kinnigoli, Kirem, Mundkur, Mukamar-santhoor kopla,Kudupu,Perar etc will go to the history like Mesopotamia.

Let us stop any more expansions of giant industries in and around the outskirts of Mangalore. Don't destroy the farmers living in D.K. Already we are witnessing more diseases in D. K. because of these industries. If minister so wishes let the industry be started at his home town and let his house and property be gone to MRPL. Then he'll understand the plight of famers, who have to desert their livelihood.

I read this article and felt like laughing at thought people have towards modernisation and investments by Govt. I was based in Dubai but now I am Yiwu in China. I came to China a decade ago. Even though I was coming to China often I never came to interior of China. I see a sea of change in China.

In a decade life has changed for good in China. People have lots of spare money to spend. Infrastructures are in best shape nad world class even in some un known places. What ever Govt thinks does it and people just enjoy it without grumbling. The govt here thought of electricity & water and developed individual places.

Things are so easy here even if one does not know the langauage and for a foreighner. But see things in Our place. Today with great hard work of some people we have interantional airport and we have lots of scope for improving the lost of people.

See these people putting venom in peoples minds. Why is there so much cry about the thermal electricity project in SK? Support if there any development without dangers to our children. Thanks

In Kannada there is a saying " Kodaliya Kaavu Kulakke Moola" - the ( wooden ) handle of an axe is fatal to its own family ( because it helps in cutting trees though the handle itself is made of wood). Some of our leaders act like the handle of the axe.

Though elected by a democratic process they lack the courage to face the people with the details of such projects. Instead they try to implement them taking shelter behind the officials and some like minded persons. If they are sure that what they propose is beneficial to the people why they are secretive about it.

Big projects means big money and big money means substantial " educating expenses" ( a term used in Bofors case) for politicians. So a general referandum on issues concerning the elctorate are on the least priority for these people.
