Mangalore, Aug 19: The role played by librarians is not only important with in the four walls of libraries but also has the lasting impact much beyond boundaries of libraries, Dr Devaraj, principal of SDM College of Business Management opined. 

He was speaking at the inaugural of Padmashree Dr S R Ranganathan's Day, held in association with Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu Library Association at Seminar Hall of Canara First Grade College in the city.  

Librarians are important and form integral parts of the chain, they play an important role in making students not only confident but also competent. The librarians guide students in tracing out important details amidst the details that are not highly important. 

The phenomenal growth of the reading habits of students largely rests on the interest that librarians take; the principal added recalling his personal experience on the significance of librarians in molding his life. 

Remembering Dr Ranganathan who paved the way for the profound growth and gave a new dimension to Library Science that has come a long way since the days of its existence, he added sacrifice made by him should be remembered, and his contributions must be acknowledged since he was persistent and workaholic. K Baradol professor Department of Library and Information Science of Mangalore University   detailed the modern condition of the libraries, works of  Dr Ranganathan, how the principals of him catering to the needs of " unhindered flow of information," and including every one in the spectrum of "paperless society." He also alluded to E-Libraries.

Dr MK Bhandi, librarian of Mangalore University, after releasing DAKLA News Letter, said that to deliver the information for those who have not received yet, that should be the core values of librarians. 

He also called on the librarians to develop passion towards the profession and develop the team leadership and to take the responsibility and show your views as Library Science is getting good mileage and good status." 

Dr Divakara Bhat H, Dr S S Kumbar, K Balakrishna, K Ganapathi Bhat, Nalini K were felicitated during the celebration for them obtaining Doctorate and M Phil degrees respectively.

Chethana, who secured the first rank in MLIS (master in library and information science) during the academic year 2005-07 speaking to Daijiworld shared her happiness that her pains not only paid but also honored who also received felicitation during the celebration at the presence of the dignitaries. 

Raghuveer Mudhya, retired librarian of SDM Law College was felicitated on his retirement.

Prof B Shivananda Bhat vice principal of Canara College delivered his presidential address; Indira T, president of the Association welcomed and introduced the dignitaries, Dr Purushothama Gowda, secretary of the Association proposed vote of thanks. Shekhar H P, a librarian of Centenary Public Library of Corporation compered the programme.
