GST bill deadlock: PM invites Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh for tea

New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI): Reaching out to main opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh for tea this evening during which issues like GST may come up.

Modi today invited the Congress leaders at his Race Course Road residence at 7 PM, sources said.

This assumes significance as the Government and the Congress are at loggerheads which is stalling the passage of crucial legislations like the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had yesterday said that the Prime Minister is willing to speak to everyone to get the landmark indirect tax law through.

Jaitley, who needs Parliament approval for GST Bill in the winter session to roll out the new indirect tax regime as planned from April 1, said he has spoken to "almost all Congress leaders" on the issue.

"We have absolutely no hesitation even at the level of Prime Minister. We have never had in it in the past, we don't have it (now). He is willing to speak to everyone," he had said.

Congress had stalled passage of the GST Constitution Amendment Bill in the last session of Parliament over its demand that a revenue-neutral rate not higher than 18 per cent be mentioned in it. It is also opposed to states being given powers to levy additional 1 per cent tax on supply of goods over and above GST rate.

I used to think if Modi becomes PM then he will go war with Pakistan and may put Sonia, Rahul etc in jail on corruption charges that he used to say during elections.

But now he is only drinking tea with everybody.

The BJP must first explain why it allowed the nation to sacrifice 2 percentage points of additional GDP over the last 4 to 5 years. If the BJP had cooperated with the Manmohan Singh government, the GST would have been operational by 2012. Now it is scheduled to kick off only by April 2016, if everything goes right in Parliament.

Yes,the GST Delay is Hurting Growth, but Modi Has as Much to Answer For as Sonia why they oppose it for 3 years?

The wisest man ever lived, King Solomon said " Pride goes before destruction......... Proverbs 16:18.

Mr. Modi's strategy of ruling is a very secret agenda, from day one of his administration, it was like an autocratic game plan, but every plan is falling apart.

Now, it is known all over the world that the current BJP Government is acting like an intolerant and dictator type administration. The big dreams about FDI is seriously challenged and questioned by the foreign investors at this very critical economic slow down hurting the whole world economy.

GST is an old concept ny congress which was hanging because of opposition at that time. It will benefit largely Gujaratis who are paying lot of tax in other states. So Modi is pressurised by Gujjus.

During Chai pe Charcha, Soniaji and Dr Manmohan Singhji should desist temptations to get trapped. Mr Modi is deceptive - there is an ocean of difference between his thoughts, words and actions. Congress should stick to National interest irrespective of the bait of getting opposition leader status. Support the govt., if it is in national interest. Bring the govt., to its knees to respect the opposition and engage in a dialogue. Baring a 56" inch chest should end from now on. Govt., should manifest by their actions that within the 56" chest there is a heart that feels for the country and the citizens.

Good initiative to pass GST bill which is in the interest of the nation.
Time and again, we have to emphasize that, without tax/ judiciary reforms, growth of our nation is distant dream!
Who will invest /do business in a nation, where there are archaic laws?
It normally takes a decade to settle a case in court?
Another thing, without peace and harmony within, prosperity is distant dream.
