Kundapur, Aug 14: The newly-developed port of Gangolly is completely submerged in heaps of sand accumulated owing to excessive sea erosion and violent waves of the Arabian Sea.

The wharf in fact should have been ready for the opening ceremony by the end of May 2007. Besides the quay belonging to the old port has collapsed, thereby throwing the fishing activity out of gear.

The fate of the fishermen has thus been left in the lurch. The new port is now out of bounds where as the old one has gone out of use. Fishing boats cannot be anchored as the dredging operation has been suspended though it is high time that the silt accumulated was removed.

The new port was built with the help of grants both by the center and the state governments. All the facilities including wharf, the port and the fisheries departments provided shed and gutters.

As the work entrusted to the contract of Chennai-based company has been over, the need of the hour is to clear the silt at the confluence of Gangolly river and the Arabian Sea.

I am thrilled to see the photographs of Ganguli which reminded my childhood. However sad to see the damage caused by erosion. Hope they will be repaired and restored soon so the fisheries industry can start fishing.
