Kolkata, Oct 28 (IANS): Asserting that the delay in the gazette notification of the results of the Siliguri local body polls may lead to horse trading, leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra has written to the State Election Commission (SEC) urging immediate notification of the results.

"The undue delay in publication of results of Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad has raised allegations of facilitations of unscrupulous horse trading to undo the decisive mandate in favour of the Left Front," Mishra said in the letter on Wednesday.

"The results of the Bidhannagar and Asansol municipal corporations, held on the same day (October 3) have been published promptly followed by oath taking of the councillors and election of chairperson and other functionaries immediately thereafter," said Mishra.

The ruling Trinamool Congress swept both the Bidhannagar and Asansol Municipal Corporations, while the Communist Party of India-Marxist led Left Front won the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad -- a three-tier subdivision body.

Mishra, also the CPI-M state secretary, pointed to "instances of the SEC being pressurised" by the leaders of the ruling party, particularly the resignation of former state election commissioner S.R. Upadhyay in the midst of election to these civic bodies.

Siliguri mayor and former state minister Asok Bhattacharya along with party activists held a demonstration outside the office of the Siliguri sub-divisional officer demanding immediate gazette notification of the poll result.

Bhattacharya said the administration has been given a 48-hour deadline for issuing the notification, failing which the Left Front will launch a massive protest movement.
